Embedded Tutoring Best Practices

A collaborative guide for instructors and tutors

These recommendations were developed in collaboration with faculty to support the success of embedded tutoring. We encourage instructors and tutors to meet early in the semester to discuss shared goals, clarify expectations, and identify outcomes that will best support student success.

Reviewing this document together before the tutoring assignment begins helps establish a strong foundation for a collaborative and effective partnership.

Goals of Embedded Tutoring

Increase student success and retention by providing targeted, in-class academic support
Promote active learning through guided practice and peer-to-peer interaction
Strengthen connections between students and campus support services
Foster a sense of belonging by integrating tutors into the classroom community
Provide early intervention for students who may be struggling academically
Bridge gaps in understanding by offering clarification and additional examples

Embedded Tutor Recommendations

✓ Embedded Tutors Should Remember To:

Attend class sessions regularly to stay aligned with course content and expectations
Collaborate with the instructor to clarify goals, expectations, and areas where students need the most support
Model effective study habits and problem-solving strategies for students
Facilitate small-group activities or discussions to encourage participation and deeper understanding
Circulate during class to answer questions and provide on-the-spot clarification
Offer targeted assistance to students who appear disengaged or struggling with the material
Promote use of campus resources such as the Student Success Center, library, or workshops
Maintain open communication with the instructor about student progress and challenges
Respect classroom norms and boundaries while fostering a welcoming learning environment
Encourage independent learning by guiding students toward finding solutions rather than giving direct answers
Support equity and inclusion by ensuring all students have equal access to assistance

✗ Embedded Tutors Should Remember NOT To:

Take over teaching the class or replace the instructor's role
Function as a TA or personal assistant to the instructor
Complete assignments or exams for students
Provide answers without explanation or bypass the learning process
Critique or challenge the instructor's teaching methods in front of students
Discuss student performance or grades with anyone other than the instructor
Engage in side conversations that distract from instruction
Ignore classroom boundaries or disrupt the flow of the lesson
Share personal opinions unrelated to course content during instructional time
Favor certain students or spend all attention on one group
Disclose confidential student information outside of approved communication with the instructor

Instructor Recommendations for Successful Embedded Tutoring

Meet with the tutor at the start of the term to review course objectives, expectations, and roles
Provide the tutor with access to course materials such as syllabi, assignments, and lecture slides
Clearly define boundaries for the tutor's responsibilities in and out of class
Introduce the tutor to the class to establish credibility and encourage students to seek help
Communicate regularly with the tutor about student progress, upcoming topics, and areas of concern
Encourage the tutor to participate in class activities without taking over instruction
Offer feedback to the tutor on their interactions and effectiveness
Promote collaboration by involving the tutor in planning review sessions or study groups
