Accommodations
In some cases you might have a student in your course that needs special accommodations. This normally comes directly from the Richland Accommodations office Links to an external site., but could also include a student who needs to take an exam at a different time from the rest of the class.
Below are some different features in Canvas that can help you better accommodate students and their needs.
Extended Test Taking Time
If a student needs extra time for a quiz (normally due to a learning accommodations) you can easily add the needed time to a quiz. See the following guide for more information - Once I publish a timed quiz, how can I give my students extra time? Links to an external site.
Different Assignment/Discussion/Quiz Due Dates for Different Students
If you need to give a student (or students) different assignment due dates compared to the rest of the class you can do this using the Differentiated Assignment feature in Canvas. When you do this students only see the due date they are assigned, they do not see the dates for other students. For more information see the following guides.

Accommodations Testing Course in Canvas (for students with the "Tests Read" accommodation)
Instructors who have students with this accommodation and already have their tests in Canvas, can use the Differentiated Assignments feature to set up dates/times for the student(s) to take these tests in the Testing Center. Testing Center computers have the Natural Reader program that allows students to highlight portions of their test and have it read to them so they can answer the questions.
Instructors who have students with this accommodation and do not have their tests in Canvas, can have the tests for those students added to the Accommodations Testing Course in Canvas. Instructors submit their test referral through myRichland and need to allow lead time for Online Learning personnel to get the test formatted and added to the course. Once the students complete the test, the instructor can go into the Accommodations Testing Course and retrieve their students’ grades.
For additional information on this process, please contact Elizabeth Jackson in Online Learning at ejackson@richland.edu.
