Mandatory Student Orientation

mandatory.png All students need to complete the Canvas Student Orientation before they will have access to their course(s). This includes students enrolled in traditional, hybrid, and online courses. The orientation only needs to be taken once and normally takes between 1-2 hours to complete. Once the orientation is completed it takes 20 minutes for students to have access to an available course(s) in Canvas. Checking Student Completion Status

To tell which students still need to complete the orientation, go into a course, and click on the People link on the left. You will see a list of all students in your course. If the student hasn’t completed the orientation their section will be listed as “Need to complete Orientation.” Those who have completed the orientation will show up with a regular section number; example MATH 113-01.

Contacting Students who need to Complete the Orientation

Since the students who need to complete the orientation are in a separate section, faculty can easily go to their Inbox and select that course and specific “Need to complete Orientation” section and email just those students who still need to complete the orientation. **This function only works after a course has been published.**

Attendance and Grades for Students who haven’t Completed the Orientation

Since the students who need to complete the orientation are in a separate section, faculty will need to go to that section to add attendance for those students. In addition, when faculty enter grades the students will be in the “Need to complete Orientation” section, not their normal section. Once students complete the orientation they will be moved to the correct section and their grades and attendance will be moved and updated with them.
