About this Course

This course is a form of hybrid combining course content as assignment presentations (lecture) online and in-person work (lab) in the drawing studio. We will be using a web-based learning management system, Canvas, as the means to present information and to communicate via email, which can include submitting images of works in progress.

This class will require the use of a home computer or laptop. A cell phone will not meet the technology needs of this course. Cuesta Student Services can provide technical information and Cuesta Library can provide access to computer use.

In addition to online presentations, the working time in the lab will be preceded by at-home sketchbook studies and followed by self-directed continuation of assignments. You will review problem descriptions and directions. Each assignment will have an Objective, a Premise, and a Method. You will make sketchbook studies and create images and compositions to resolve problem propositions.

Individual creative engagement with subject matter can absorb an unanticipated amount of time. That is the nature of making visual art. It is not always a linear process of applying craft skills. As image makers we may revisit propositions and explore alternatives, both in opinions and techniques.

In a typical on-campus face-to-face studio course, you would have 2 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab combined in 2 meetings per week, plus outside individual work. Be prepared to commit at least the same level of effort in this course. As a working artist, it gets really good when you get off the clock; when you create the time you need.

Assignment problems are delivered online as a sequence designed to provide a progressive structure for students to work in the studio and to interpret and resolve problems independently.

Accessing the Course

If this is your first experience online with Canvas - ART 222 / CRN: 30874, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not easier than actual face-to-face classes, although they may be much more convenient for many students. We are a hybrid form between 2 forms. Expect to spend at least as much time on this course as you would on a course that meets only face-to-face. This class has the potential of enriched experience beyond the ordinary. The key to success here is exercising mature self-discipline in managing time, in order to integrate class work with individual necessity time, including time required for other classes, to get and remain current with assignments.

You will see your course in Canvas on the first day of class. You can access Canvas by clicking on Canvas from the top bar of the Cuesta homepage (www.cuesta.edu), or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar.

If you are not familiar with logging into canvas, please refer to the Canvas Quick Reference Guide.Links to an external site. Once logged into Canvas you will be directed on where to get started. Be sure to read all the direction on the course home page.

Online Learning

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. The lecture component will be self-directed study, and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Best access from a desktop or laptop computer is to use Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. Difficulty logging in or viewing the course may be because you are not using the correct URL: http://cuesta.instructure.com, or you are using your phone or an unsupported browser.

Cuesta students are encouraged to direct all technical inquiries to: support@my.cuesta.edu. If you are having issues with Canvas, you should contact Canvas Support Hotline at (877) 921-7680 or click on the “HELP” button on the Canvas Navigation to report a problem.

IS an ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

Go to the Cuesta College Canvas Tutorial (self-paced)Links to an external site.,  there are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy:

Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums and in-person class meetings. Weekly announcements to students, timely and effective feedback on student assignments, emails messaging to individuals, and weekly office hours are all part of an effective contact policy for this course.

Course Description

Drawing 02 continues to build on fundamentals: principles and basic concepts engaged in Art 221 Drawing 01. This course is designed to further your explorations of fundamentals and to expand their applications, through a sequence of selected topics and subjects at an intermediate level.

The purpose of the drawing projects is to extend and develop the student’s ability to integrate seeing (perceptual experience) with purpose (conceptual analysis) in order to create an effective drawing process; one that achieves coherent and/or expressive images.

We will engage topics and subjects in the drawing process, including varied materials and techniques, which will yield effective images that are both descriptive and expressive. Individual creative interpretation in response to assignment problems is encouraged and supported.

Successful student response depends on work done in each student’s sketchbook. Ideas must be imagined, then realized as drawn images, studies, before resolutions as renderings. Each student must create a coherent drawing process for themself in order to create a motif as a realized image. We are looking for balance between spontaneity and traditional conventions. Development of craft skill is necessary. The sketchbook is to rehearse, to test-drive ideas. This class acknowledges imagination beyond craft skills.

The studio is where we get the benefit of working live among colleagues, to see how others address the same proposition. Beginning students are welcome to share this same benefit.

“Art is not technology, and cannot be ‘mastered’. It is an endless access to revelatory states of mind.” -- Gustav Flaubert

Required Meetings

The class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30-3:40 PM on campus (SLO) for lab/studio work. Attendance is required! At that time we will work live in the studio on assignments presented online prior to lab.

Regular attendance will allow you to stay current and discuss processes in real time. Your success in this class will be enhanced by connection with your fellow classmates and seeing their drawings in progress.

Learning Outcomes

Art 222 Drawing 02 is an academic course accredited for transfer to University of California and California State University. The course is designed as a sequence of assignments to strengthen and expand fundamental drawing concepts and techniques at an intermediate level in order to meet the course objective to promote the following student learning objectives:

    1. To develop understanding of drawing as a creative act of image-making in a context of visual and cultural literacy.

    2. To engage topics and subjects with an approach in drawing that integrates experiential perception (looking) with conceptual analysis (thinking) to achieve coherent images.

    3. To use a variety of materials and techniques in specific applications to accomplish specific descriptive and expressive objectives.

    4. To recognize cultural conventions and various styles in the historical and contemporary art of drawing.

    5. To assess and discuss drawing using relevant terminology.

Student Workspace

You will need to establish a home work space to begin assignments in your sketchbook and continue assignment work individually at your own pace. The advantage here is seeing colleagues’ works in progress in the studio and working independently to develop your own terms.

Your home space does not have to be a large space, but one that allows for actual use and clean-up as art-making can be messy and cause clutter. A table or desk top with good light will serve the purpose. Plan a designated work time and that will make your combined studio experience manageable and effective.

Materials

Most materials coincide with materials required for Drawing 01 (if you collected materials for that course, you will have most of the materials required for this course). Additionally, there are many materials that are provided by the instructor during this course (especially in the realm of paper, boards, and mounting materials). That being said, you will want to make sure you have most these materials for working in your home studio setting, and for future projects / courses in the fine arts.
