Hello!

Welcome to PEDS 110, otherwise known as Career Planning, Comprehensive. That's a bit of a mouthful, I know. Still, I think the word "comprehensive" is appropriate here because this class is not just about planning a career, it's about choosing a career path and lifestyle that's right for you, including all the aspects of your personality, wants, needs, and current situation.

Course Details

Availability for Spring 2021:

Note: this is now a late-start 12 week course.

PEDS 110, Career Planning, Comprehensive (CRN: 33417) will become available at 12:00 a.m. on the first day of class, March 1, 2021. Our last day of class is May 21, 2021. Information on how to enroll is below. Keep reading if you are not yet enrolled.

PEDS 110 is a fully online, asynchronous course. (It always has been. This course is not a remix of an in-person course. It was designed from the beginning to be held fully online.) Class assignments may be due any weekday, Monday through Friday (except for holidays). The class will be available on weekends, but no assignments will be due on weekends or holidays. You do not have to log in to the course on any particular day or time, but you should expect to log in several times per week to participate in class discussions and keep up with due dates.

Course Description:

PEDS 110 introduces a decision-making process that will help students envision and plan for a future that is productive, achievable, and stimulating. The culmination of this process is the development of an online career and education 10-year plan that can be used for advisory and academic coaching purposes and updated as students grow, change, or face transitions. The personalized 10-year plan provides the focus and intrinsic motivation to succeed in collage, at work, and in life.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the capacity to establish and consolidate identity, becoming "identity achieved", through the completion of projects and assignments.
  • Demonstrate the capacity to recognize the impact of career choice on personal lifestyle.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to analyze the effect of personal interest and aptitudes on education and career planning.

(That's fancy college talk. Basically, at the end of this course you will have a better understanding of who you are, what you want out of your future life and career, and a plan for getting what you want.)

Bingham, M., Stryker, S. Career Choices and Changes: A Guide for Discovering Who You Are, What You Want, and How to Get It. (6th/e). Academic Innovations. (2019). ISBN: 978-1-878787-65-5

Note: The textbook contains readings and assignment instructions that are not provided through the online course, and is required reading. You will not be able to complete all the required assignments without the textbook.

Another Note: I realize that the most recent edition of the textbook is very expensive. However, the 4th and 5th editions can be used instead. Just make sure the publish date is 2012 or after. I found used 4th editionsLinks to an external site. and used 4th and 5th editionsLinks to an external site. on AbeBooks.com. If those links don't work for you, search "Career Choices and Changes Used". Also be sure that the cover of the book you are buying looks like the picture. (There's another one that not a college textbook, and the cover looks different.)
