Child Family & Community

ECE 202 / HDHS 202

This is a fast passed course. We will cover 18 weeks of material in a condensed 6-week session. Attendance, participation, and communication are key to being successful. The first module of the course will walk you through my expectations, and how to use Canvas if this is your first time in an online course.

Instructor Contact Expectations: 

The best and fastest way to contact me is email.  I will generally respond to your emails within 24 hours during weekdays only.  During busy times of the semester, the response time may increase to 48 hours.  On weekends, I will do my best to get back to you ASAP but I cannot guarantee an expeditious response. 

Welcome to ECE/HDHS 202 DE!  I am so glad that you are here!  As we move through the learning modules together this upcoming semester, we'll be exploring our own values, beliefs, and culture and how we can best understand children within the context of their families and communities.  We will all be pulling deeply from our personal experiences and sharing them with others to work towards a new understanding of family partnership and strengths-based community building.

This course is entirely online via Canvas (https://cuesta.instructure.com/), including all coursework (discussions, assignments, projects, and quizzes). There are no face-to-face class meetings. Keep in mind that this course will require as much time as a traditional course, but you will find more flexibility and be able to complete coursework during times that work with your personal schedule. 

Class opens / Accessing Canvas:

You will see your course in Canvas on the first day of class. You can access Canvas by clicking on Canvas from the top bar of the Cuesta homepage (www.cuesta.edu), or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar.

If you are not familiar with logging into canvas, please refer to the Canvas Quick Reference Guide.Links to an external site. Once logged into Canvas you will be directed on where to get started. Be sure to read all the direction on the course home page.  

If you are having difficulty logging into Canvas after the first day of the course, and need assistance please email me or technical support at this email address support@my.cuesta.edu.   

Online Learning: 

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no lecture component, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. There are no face-to-face meetings.  Please be prepared to spend 8 - 12 hours per week on coursework for this class

(If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy:

Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email, phone or messaging to individuals; and virtual office hours.

Course Description:

Examines the processes of socialization focusing on the interrelationship of family, school, peers, and community. Identifies the influence of multiple societal contexts. Explores the role of collaboration between family, community, and schools in supporting children’s development.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Utilize Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model, to describe socialization of the child,
    focusing on the interrelationship of family, school, media, peers, and community.
  2. Identify the educational, political, and socioeconomic impacts on children and families.
  3. Introduce community resources and agencies designed to strengthen and support families.
  4. Analyze oneself, to gain personal insight related to family, life experiences, and cultural
    identities, and to appreciate the impact on relationships, attitudes, and points of view.
  5. Investigate current research and historical trends, regarding social issues that impact
    children, families, schools, and their communities.
