ECE 201, Distance Education (CANVAS)

GETTING STARTED: ECE 201DE is online (CANVAS), including all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes). There are no required class meetings. Keep in mind that this class will require as much time as a traditional course; however, without the traditional classroom, you will have much more flexibility to participate in discussions, take a quiz, or complete an assignment during times that work with your personal schedule. This is not a self-paced course; we will move through the material as a class.

Office Hours: When the semester starts, I am available online (in our course, click on the Canvas Inbox to contact me) where I can answer questions or address any concerns. I will make every attempt to respond within 24 hours, Monday-Friday before 3:00pm. 
I am not available on weekends.
I am available to meet with students, in person (building 4000/room 4041) or by phone (805) 546.3100 x2765, during my scheduled office hours:
Monday 10:00-11:30
Tuesday 11:00-12:00
Wednesday 10:00-11:30
Thursday 11:00-12:00

Required Textbook: The Developing Person Childhood through Adolescence, Berger, 11th Edition (McMillan Learning, ISBN-13: 9781319217815) + LaunchPad (the textbook's online learning tool)

  • A link to purchase the loose-leaf textbook + LaunchPad (at a reduced price) will be available in our course shell, two weeks prior to the start of class.

Students are expected to have the textbook and a LaunchPad access code, starting week one of the  semester.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • Analyze major developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence in the areas of cognitive, biosocial, psychosocial and language development using standard research methodologies.
  • Identify possible causes, cultural, economic, political, and historical aspects, or sources of developmental change and explain reasons for disturbances in the developmental process.
  • Identify and discuss the various theories relating to human development.
  • Recognize children of all ages, cultures, and background, observe and identify similarities and differences, constructing and developing basic observational skills.
  • Identify theories of self-esteem development and how to foster self-esteem development in children who exhibit typical and atypical developmental processes.
  • Analyze the development of your own self esteem citing the major concepts and processes including social/environmental interactions starting with the early years progressing through to adolescence.

Required Coursework: This course includes weekly quizzes and questions, related to the sixteen chapters in the textbook. Additionally, there is a Playground Observation (at the park) and an in-person Interview with a school-age child. These assignments are required, and other options are not available.

Access to the Canvas course: The course will open several days early so that students can view the syllabus and become familiar with the layout of the course (students will not be able to submit work). Students will be notified via email. Please log in on the first day of the semester, so that you can complete and submit the week one assignments (including textbook quizzes) before the Friday (at 4:00pm) due date. ECE 201 is not self-paced. Students may not submit work early to accommodate work or travel plans. Students will need access to a computer (with Internet) every week of the semester.

Starting on day one of the semester, course information will be provided in CANVAS.
