Welcome to Health 208 Distance Education Spring 2020
 
Welcome to HEED 208! I look forward to working with you all this Spring semester.  Please read the information below which will provide you with information related to class access and the textbook requirement. If you have any questions, please email me at the email listed below.

Course Start Date Online: Monday, March 23, 2020
Reminder:This is a  9-week course and will end May 21, 2020.  There is no spring break!

Computer and Class Requirements:

  • You must have access to a computer
  • Email account
  • Reliable Internet connection. You will also need to have a backup plan in case your internet provider or computer goes down. All of practical assignments and tests will be submitted to me via the assignment dropbox. 
  • It is also essential that you understand the basic concepts of email, web navigation and online communication to succeed in this course.
  • If you aren't sure that you are ready to take an online class, please go to the Online Readiness Resources Links to an external site.and take the "self assessment survey" then read "Your Results".  (If that survey does NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section).

Course add/drop: You must log into the course the first day, or you will be dropped from the course.  I need confirmation that you will be taking the course so that I can add students who are waiting!

This course is fully online. There are no mandatory meetings.
 
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Presents the major health problems facing non-dominant/minority ethnic groups related to acculturation, assimilation and biological variations. Various health belief systems, folk remedies, health practices, and attitudes toward health will be analyzed to promote prejudice reduction and understanding of cultural differences. A variety of non-traditional and experiential teaching/learning strategies will be used to examine alternative approaches to healthy lifestyles.
 
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
  1. Identify barriers that minorities face when access or receiving health care in the U.S. today.
  2. Compare and contrast nutrient analysis of various ethnic diets. (Optional: Demonstrate accurate analysis of ingredients on a food label and/or nutrition assessment, identifying saturated fats, trans-fats, salt and refined sugar.)
  3. Describe lifestyle changes you have made or plan to make as a result of taking this health class
  4. Identify lifestyle changes that will reduce your risk of major chronic or communicable diseases based on your family health history and/or current lifestyle choices
  5. Evaluate contemporary media, literature and institutions for discrimination and bias in multi-cultural health.
  6. Analyze examples of dominant and non-dominant group conflict.
  7. Explore various international health issues.

Please recognize that an online class does require just as much time as a traditional face to face course. It is very important that you keep up with the readings, assignments, quizzes, tests, discussions, etc.  Once you get behind it can be a challenge to catch up in this course. I do not accept any late assignments no exceptions.
