Thank you for your interest in our class. My name is Sean Boling, and I'll be your instructor should you decide to stick with us. I have been a full-time English Instructor at Cuesta College since 2000 (so it's real easy to do the math and figure out how many years I've been here).

The best way to reach me is by email: sboling@cuesta.edu. My office is on the North County Campus, Room N3221, and the office phone number is 591-6200 ex. 4504.

As you can see on the menu, I have made available a preview of the syllabus for each course I teach. You are welcome to explore the one you're interested in, so you can see what the assignments involve, what texts we use, and what will be required of you.

Students sometimes experience confusion over whether the course they registered for is a Distance Education (online) section, or on campus (and which campus: San Luis Obispo or North County). Please double check the schedule in Class Finder to verify what kind of course you are considering.

I like teaching both, as there are benefits to each.

When teaching online, I go with an "asynchronous" model, meaning there are no set days and times, only deadlines when assignments are due. Sounds pretty nice, eh? Yes, but there are some unique considerations to keep in mind when deciding whether online education is a good fit for you.

A smart first move is to visit the Online Readiness Resources and take the "self assessment survey" then read "Your Results".  (If that survey doesn't describe you, then taking this class online is not a good idea.)

If you are a good candidate for an online class, make sure you have access to the following:

  • A computer (I know, right? But you may be surprised how many people gloss over this, or think they can manage with just their phone; a phone is not enough!)
  • Email account
  • Reliable Internet connection. You will also need to have a backup plan in case your internet provider or computer goes down. All assignments and tests will be submitted via the assignment dropbox.
  • It is also essential that you understand the basic concepts of email, web navigation and online communication to succeed in this course.

Our online courses at Cuesta are delivered through a Learning Management System called "Canvas". Before class starts, get comfortable with Canvas by completing the Cuesta Canvas Online Orientation.

You should also review the Canvas Quick Reference for Students Online.

If you have difficulty logging into Canvas once the course you have registered for is available, and need assistance, please email me or technical support at this email address: support@instructure.com

If you are a student who requires accommodations due to a learning challenge please do the following:

1. Contact the DSPS officeLinks to an external site.

On the SLO Campus: Building N3000, (805) 591-6215

On the North County Campus: Room N3024, (805) 591-6216

2. Present documentation of disability for review by a disabilities specialist
3. Discuss options for support through DSPS
4. Present a signed DSPS authorization for accommodation to your instructor

Thank you again for your curiosity in our course. Let me know if you have any questions about the specific class you're interested in, or the nature of online classes in general.

Looking Forward To Working With You,

SB
