The best and fastest way to contact me is email.  I will generally respond to your emails within 24 hours during weekdays only.  During busy times of the semester, the response time may increase to 48 hours.  On weekends, I will do my best to get back to you ASAP but I cannot guarantee an expeditious response. 

Course Environment:

I am your instructor, Mechelle Medhurst. I have been teaching Health classes as well as activity classes at Cuesta for over 23 years, so you are in good hands!  This semester you will have the opportunity to learn more about major issues of special relevance to drugs and health, with an emphasis on chronic disease prevention, application of self-empowerment strategies, and local as well as global issues related to drug use and abuse.

This course is fully online- there is no mandatory face to face meetings. However, this is not a self-paced course. The course is divided into modules which will have specific due dates. This is a 9 week course my friends so it is a bit accelerated.

 

Class opens / Accessing Canvas:

Prior to the Monday class start October 14th, you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder that class will be starting and log in procedures for Canvas, the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content. You can access Canvas by logging into MyCuesta, then clicking on the Resources Tab, then clicking on Canvas in the Online Learning Channel, or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar. Do not bookmark / favorite the canvas site after your login, or you will get an error message next time you try to log in. You must access the canvas log in directly.

If you are not familiar with logging into canvas, please refer to the Canvas Quick Reference Guide.Links to an external site. Once logged into Canvas you will be directed on where to get started. Be sure to read all the direction on the course home page.

Course Description

Presents an in-depth analysis of the major health problems associated with the use, misuse, and abuse of drugs including herbs/plants, performance-enhancing, over-the-counter, prescription, controlled, and designer drugs. Emphasizes the metabolism of drugs, drug interactions, and addiction from various socio-cultural perspectives such as age, gender, and ethnicity.

Add / Drop Policy: You must log into the course, via Canvas, on the first day of class (Monday, October 18th) Failure to log in may result in being dropped from the course and your place be given to another student.  In addition to my policy, please review the Cuesta policy for drops

 

Waitlist Policy: If there are spots available, I will let students on the waitlist know the first day of class. I usually add 5 students since it has been my experience that at least 5 students enrolled will drop.
