Please carefully read this welcome letter and the course syllabus.  They will give you a good idea of the course requirements and what it takes to be successful in this class.

Please note that the Remind app is the fastest way to reach me.  If you have a smartphone and you want to receive text notifications, text @acct201bf to 81010.  Or if you would like to receive push notifications, download the app and search for class @acct201bf.  If you don't want to use a phone, you may access Remind at remind.comLinks to an external site. The class code is @acct201bf.

I will generally respond within 24 hours.  During weekends or those times in the semester when things are really, really busy the turnaround time may be 48 hours.  I typically check my email at various intervals between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Mandatory Proctored Final Exam:  The final exam is mandatory and proctored and worth 20% of your grade.  It will be multiple-choice, approximately 80 questions and cumulative, with emphasis placed on the last three chapters of the term.  You will have 120 minutes to complete the exam and some questions will require you to make calculations.  The proctoring is done via an online proctoring service called Proctorio. Proctorio is online, so there is no need to leave your home; however, you will need access to a webcam on your computer and your student ID or driver’s license.  You can find out more about ProctorioLinks to an external site. at their website.

If you fail to take the mandatory final exam or do not earn a grade of at least 60% on the final exam, you will receive an automatic “F” in the course even if you have earned a passing grade through completion of all assignments and exams in the course.

    • A reliable internet connection
    • An understanding of the basic concepts of email, web navigation and online communication
    • A webcam or access to a computer with a webcam for the final exam
    • Access to Zoom for optional on-line review and study sessions

IS an ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

First, go to the Online Readiness ResourcesLinks to an external site. to take a "self-assessment” using various tutorials. There are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section if there is one available.)

Course Environment:  Canvas provides the framework for the course including video lectures of instructor PowerPoint presentations, discussion forums, student files, the tools to receive and send course materials , and a grade book. Using the communication tools within Canvas you can communicate via e-mail and you can share materials  and ideas with other course participants via the Discussion Threads. Each chapter will be set-up as a Module in Canvas.  The module will contain links to the work you are expected to complete for the chapter and information about due dates and point value for the assignments.  Each class week begins on Monday with assignments typically due the following Sunday.

McGraw-Hill Connect provides the electronic book, homework assignments, and quizzes, midterms, and the final exam. McGraw Hill integrates with Canvas, and you should access your McGraw-Hill assignments via the Canvas links.

Online Learning:  If you have never taken a fully online class or if this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself  and ask for help when you need it.  You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more, on this course as you would in a course that meets face to face.  Much of your time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, discussing and problem-solving required.  This course requires a lot of time. Expect to dedicate a minimum of 8-12 hours per week on coursework.

Textbook and Materials

  • Required Text: Financial and Managerial Accounting, Information for Decisions (8th edition.)  Wild and Shaw published by McGraw Hill.

Our class is part of the inclusive access program, and we use the same textbook in this class as is used for Financial Accounting. If you took Financial Accounting before Spring 2020, you will need to work with McGraw-Hill directly.

Although not required, you may find the Microsoft Office software (Word and Excel) useful for the class project: Microsoft Office for Free (including word and PowerPoint)Links to an external site.

Course Description  & Student Learning Outcomes

This class is an online 4 unit college level managerial accounting course  where, over 18 weeks, we explore managerial accounting concepts and principles along with the applications of accounting for making business decisions.  You will learn how managers use accounting information to help companies make operational plans and decisions, to monitor the outcomes of those decisions, and to adjust operations as needed to control costs and pursue profits.

Together, we investigate the ways costs behave, and you will become familiar with the tools to analyze and report on costs, prepare budgets, and assess performance.  We will also take some time to consider corporate social responsibility, opportunities for fraud, and employee motivation and behavior.

The course includes lots of opportunities for practice through homework and class problems, use of discussion forums to talk about and share ideas regarding what you are learning, and a team project that lets you apply what you have learned to your very own company.

Advised prerequisites are ENGL 156, MATH 123, and ACCT 201A/BUS 201A (Financial Accounting).

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of accounting terminology, procedures, and functions within a business.
  2. Prepare accounting information for internal and external users using various costing models.
  3. Analyze financial data to form business decisions for planning, directing, and controlling a business.
  4. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication. This includes demonstrating professional and ethical behaviors and using technology effectively.

Technical Support

Cuesta students are encouraged to direct all technical support inquiries to  support@my.cuesta.edu. If you are having issues with Canvas, you should contact the Canvas Support Hotline at (877) 921-7680 or click on the help button on the Canvas Navigation bar to report a problem. If you are having difficulty viewing the course or logging in, it may be because you are not using the correct url: https://cuesta.instructure.com/ or you are using your phone or using an unsupported browser. For CONNECT issues, contact McGraw-Hill tech supportLinks to an external site. at 800-331-5094 or by email/chat.

If the Cuesta server goes down or the power is out, Canvas will also be down, and you will not be able to access your online course.  When this happens, you should email me from your student or personal email for more information or instructions.  This has happened from time to time, so do not panic, and notify me during the power outage so that I have a date/time stamp. Cuesta occasionally announces power outages or upgrades to the campus computer systems.  These will be announced in advance in Canvas or on My Cuesta.  In this case, you will need to plan ahead with your submission of assignments.  Regular review of Announcements in Canvas will help prevent this problem.
