Welcome to ESL 743: Intermediate Academic Grammar (CRN # 50970) !

Mondays Wednesdays before and after Zoom class: 5:45pm – 6:00pm and 6:30pm – 6:45pm. 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION   

Welcome to ESL 743! This 6-week course develops English language skills with a focus on grammar at the intermediate level. The course provides instruction in present, past, and future tenses. 

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 

Students will: 

  1.  Produce statements and questions of present and past verb tenses. 
  2.  Use intermediate-level grammatical structures in written and spoken contexts. 

 

CLASS MATERIALS 

  • We will use Focus on Grammar 2The ESL office will mail you the book. 
  • You will need your MyCuesta username and password to course material, assignments, and quizzes in Canvas (https://cuesta.instructure.com) 

 

REQUIRED REGULAR CONTACT 

  • Our class will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm – 7:30pm on Zoom. These Zoom meetings will be an opportunity to practice your English with your instructor and classmates.   
  • Please contact me if you cannot attend a Zoom class! I will take attendance just like a regular class. Please check Canvas for assignments and class video recordings if you cannot attend a Zoom class.   
  • Your Zoom camera needs to be on for the breakout room activities.  
  • I will write comments in Canvas for how to improve on your exams and assignments. Please check my comments. 
  • For help with any assignment or question, come to my virtual student hours or send me a message. 

 

ATTENDANCE / PARTICIPATION 

To fully participate in the course, basic computer skills will be needed, including 

  • using email to read and reply to messages 
  • using Canvas to click on links, take quizzes, and submit homework 
  • visiting Canvas regularly and checking your notification settings to be sure that you see assignments, comments and information in a timely manner   
  • using the phone app or website Flipgrid to watch and record videos  
  • participating in Zoom classes  

 

COURSE EVALUATION 

This is a non-credit course. Each student will receive a P (Pass), SP (Satisfactory Progress), or NP (No Pass).  In order to pass, you must achieve a 70% or higher on the course objectives. Your grade will be determined by: 

40%   Weekly assignments and homework 

40%   Quizzes and Unit tests 

20%   Online discussions and participation

  • Please ask me questions! Please tell me if you don’t understand something, or if you want me to repeat something. I hope that you will feel comfortable, make mistakes, and ask for help in class. Class is a great opportunity to practice your English skills with others who are also learning.

Summer 2021 Calendar 

Our class is organized into "Modules" on Canvas. There is a new module for each week of class. You will find your homework, assignments, and video recordings of each Zoom class in the module for that week.  

During our 6-week semester, we will study verb tenses in the Focus on Grammar Book. At the end of each unit, you will have a writing assignment and a quiz. This is how our class will be organized: 

  • Weeks 1 & 2: Welcome & Simple Present 
  • Week 3Present Progressive 
  • Week 4: Simple Past 
  • Week 5: Future 
  • Week 6: Review & Final Exam  

At the end of the course, you will have a final exam, reviewing all of the course information. The last day of class will be ThursdayJul22.
