Introduction to Printmaking

Art 240B CRN 74305

Marcia Harvey, Instructor

Welcome! to Introduction to Printmaking, Special Online Edition!  This letter is to let you know a little bit about what the course will be covering, the materials you will need, and the nuts and bolts of online education.

My name is Marcia Harvey; please feel free to address me informally, by my first name.  I am a studio artist and part-time teacher of printmaking and color theory.  Primarily, in this virtual format, I want us to share ideas and visual evidence of what it means to be human; what it means to make things; with an emphasis on relief printmaking as an expression of the visual exploration of ideas.

The print making techniques that we will employ most will be relief and monoprint.  The images we ‘pull’ from our plates will be entirely hand printed.  We will spend the first half of the course weeks working on short assignments to practice skills in printmaking, and then, in the last half of the course, we will explore more personal, in depth, and self-directed imagery and ideas.

What you will need to complete the course successfully is time, space, materials, and ideas.

Time:  You should plan on putting a minimum of 6 hours a week into this course- the time you spend each week will include things like readings, researching artists, watching films, working on your plates, printing, and meeting weekly for an informal Zoom discussion of processes and to evaluate your progress in the course.  You must communicate to me at least once a week!  Either by attending the virtual Zoom meeting, via email, or by sending me a file of your ongoing work and/or project assignments.  Failure to contact me regularly will result in your grade being lowered and/or being dropped from the class.  Missing 3 weeks of contact and/or 3 assignments will result in a grade of ‘F’ or being dropped from the class.

Space:  The amount of space you will need is about half of a kitchen table, or a desk.  The scale of the prints is partly determined by the amount of space you have available to work.

Materials:  There will be a materials packet available to pick up on campus at the Art Department- details to follow.  You might also need or want additional paper, plates, or colored inks to work with.  If you would like links to specific materials that will be useful for this course, please email me and I will send you detailed information.

IdeasThe best for last!  You are already in possession of ideas!  No need to order anything or go shopping.  We will explore some specific ideas together; notions about what art is, why we make it, and how other artists’ have answered these questions will be peppered throughout the term.  I plan to give you some choices in your assignments that I hope will engage you in the pursuit of this question:  Where does the self reside?  In our hands, our hearts?  Our eyes?  Our minds?   Making things, and the impulse, the desire, to create things, is a human trait, and each of us expresses a bit of our thoughts and personalities in the things we make, and I look forward to getting to know you through your artwork!

If you have any questions about this information or the course, please contact me via email.

The information that follows refers more generally to requirements for online learning.  Please review it carefully, especially if you are new (like I am!) to distance education.

Instructor Contact Expectations:

The best and fastest way to contact me is email.  I will try to respond to your emails during the weekday as quickly as possible.   marcia_harvey@cuesta.edu

Course Environment:

This online course will be using a Web-based Learning Management System Canvas as the method to disseminate information. Canvas provides the framework for the course including PowerPoint presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups.

Class opens / Accessing Canvas:

Prior to the Monday classes start [August 17, 2020], you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder that class will be starting and log in procedures for Canvas, the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content. You can access Canvas by logging into MyCuesta, then clicking on the Resources Tab, then clicking on Canvas in the Online Learning Channel, or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar. Do not bookmark / favorite the canvas site after your login, or you will get an error message next time you try to log in. You must access the canvas log in directly.

If you are not familiar with logging into canvas, please refer to the Canvas Quick Reference Guide.  Once logged into Canvas you will be directed on where to get started. Be sure to read all the direction on the course home page.

If you are having difficulty logging into Canvas after August 10, 2020 and need assistance please email me or technical support at this email address: support@instructure.com

Online Learning:

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no lecture component, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. There are no face-to-face meetings.  Please be prepared to spend 8 - 12 hours per week on coursework for this class

IS an ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

  • First, go to the Cuesta College Canvas Tutorial (self paced),  there are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy:

Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email, messaging to individuals; and virtual office hours.

Technical Support

Cuesta students are encouraged to direct all technical support inquiries to  support@my.cuesta.edu. If you are having issues with Canvas, you should contact the Canvas Support Hotline at (877) 921-7680, or click on the help button on the Canvas Navigation to report a problem.

If you are having difficulty viewing the course or logging in, it may be because you are not using the correct url: https://cuesta.instructure.com/ or you are using your phone or using an unsupported browser.

Your learning environment is best accessed from a desktop or laptop computer, using Firefox or Chrome.  This may solve your problem!  Please review the browser requirements and minimum computer specifications.
