IS an ONLINE CLASS for YOU?
First of all, go to the Online Readiness Resources and take the "self assessment survey". Then, read "How to survive in an online course". (If that survey does NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section. You are expected to already have the computer skills for an online class.
Keep in mind that this course will require as much time—if not more— as a traditional course. While distance education provides a convenient alternative to traditional classroom education, it requires computer literacy and much more reading and writing. This 3 unit college-level course translates into spending between 7 - 9 hours each week on coursework.
- Once the semester begins, it is your responsibility to access the course using Canvas. ALL students (no matter when they register), will be held to the same assignment deadlines for this class. An Introductory Assignment is due by 11:59pm on the first Sunday of the semester. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT BY THE DEADLINE YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE.

This course explores presents sociological, psychological and cross-cultural concepts of intimate relationship and the family unit. We will focus on diversity within and the development of committed relationships and the family unit. Intimacy dynamics, communication processes, and assessment of functionality and wellness are emphasized. I look forward to exploring this content with you!
By the end of the semester, students will be able to….
- Articulate and apply the terminology, fundamental concepts and theoretical perspectives necessary to explain intimacy dynamics within the family life cycle, and one’s own intimacy patterns, biases and evolving experiences
- Describe the elements of scientific methodology and the common research designs used by psychologists to study the family system
- Identify and critique cultural biases regarding concepts of love, marriage and the family
- Apply critical thinking skills while engaging in verbal and/or written discussions, and in completing course assignments
Required textbooks / materials:
*Textbooks can be ordered through Cuesta College bookstore online. Order early to avoid missing the first assignments; it is expected that you have your textbook prior to the semester beginning.
The quality of your contributions determines your grade for this portion of the class. Contribution of quality thoughts and analysis are imperative to succeed in this portion of grading. As stated in the Class Schedule: “Normal progress and successful completion of scholastic work depends upon regular attendance. Students are expected to attend all classes and laboratories for which they are registered. Instructors set an attendance policy for each class and it is the student’s responsibility to know and comply with each one.”
If you cannot participate in class, my expectation is you will communicate with me via e-mail, complete with reason for missing class. This may not excuse an absence but it does provide a context for your absence when I complete the evaluation of this portion of the course. In addition to points earned for contribution in class discussion, any absence from the course with failure to notification the instructor by email will be dropped from the class after 7 missed submissions. No exceptions are made.
In addition, students that fail to complete the first week of assignments will be dropped by the orientation deadline in the first week of class.

You are expected to complete your own assignments and exams. If you are caught cheating, both you and the other students involved will receive an F.
What do we mean by “cheating?”
- Sharing answers with another student to complete assignments or exams
- Submitting someone else files as your own
- Submitting either your assignments or another student’s files from a previous semester
- Helping someone or receiving help on an exam
- Getting someone else to take your exams
What happens if you cheat?
Both you and the other students involved will receive an F on the assignment, exam, and/or for the entire course.
