Welcome to AGB 205 - Farm Management

Hello and welcome everyone to Farm Management!  I am looking forward to working and learning with all of you this Fall Semester.  This course presents concepts related to the organization and operation of farm and ranch businesses. Topics include personnel management and leadership qualities, identification of factors affecting profitability, evaluation of the business for increased efficiency and profit, and the application of budgeting to laboratory farm and independent analysis of a farm.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Create and evaluate profit-maximizing output levels utilizing budgets and cost data
  2. Describe the roles and functions of the agribusiness manager and the four types of business structures
  3. Assess and propose solutions for typical farm labor or personnel issues

Textbook and Communication

  • Textbook:  Kay, Ronald D. and William Edwards and Patricia Duffy.  Farm Management, 9th Edition, McGraw Hill, 2020.
  • My preferred method of contact is via Canvas Email

    • My availability is Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM
    • I am not available Saturdays or Sundays and will begin returning Friday emails on Monday
    • Expect a response within 24 hours, or 48 hours maximum
    • If you do not hear back from me after 48 hours, please assume I did not receive your email and resend it

Method of Instruction

  • Fully online, asynchronous instruction 
  • Please check your school email/ Canvas account throughout the week
  • Each weeks’ content can be found in Modules on Canvas
    • This will include all homework assignments, discussions, quizzes, tests, and lab components
  • We will follow a Monday to Sunday schedule
  • Content will be posted Mondays at 12:00am
  • Assignments will be due Sundays by 11:59pm
  • Late assignments can be submitted as late as the following week for up to half credit

Learning Differences

Agriculture is a global industry made up of people from all over the world, many with different socioeconomic backgrounds and varying levels of education.  My intention for this class is to celebrate our differences and respect our diverse cultures.  This will help foster a healthy culture of our own in the classroom based on diversity, equity, and inclusion enabling everyone to learn regardless of their diverse learning needs.  I hope to present information in a manner where diversity will allow for different perspectives, treating people equally and respectfully will enable you to feel valued, and being inclusive helps you feel heard.  Your success in this class is of most importance and I welcome and value any input or suggestions you may have to better the course and make it more accommodating.

Computer and Software Requirements

  • You must own a computer, or have access to one to use regularly
  • You must have an email address
  • You must have a reliable internet connection, and a backup plan in case you lose internet access
  • Required software for this course is a compatible version of Microsoft office as we will have assignments using Word, Excel and Powerpoint
