Computer Requirements:

Make sure you have a computer that works for you – Both Cuesta College Campuses have Computer Labs, and Computers in Libraries (free to use). For this online course you need to have an up to date computer and basic technical abilities.

  • Browser requirements/minimum computer specifications – follow this link: http://www.cuesta.edu/student/aboutacad/distance/faqs_technical.html
  • YOU NEED a computer with up-to-date software programs in order to access all applications offered for learning online or plan time to use the Cuesta College library or computer labs FREE
  • For the final project presentation you MUST be able to produce a PowerPoint Presentation and access ADOBE for appropriate material that needs to be downloaded to view. Contact me if you do not have this software.
  • You may need to buy the appropriate software for your computer.
  • If using an iPad or Tablet, make sure you have the ability to write text to a program that can be downloaded, attached, and able for me to open. You will have two written reports for this course; turned into PDF format; and submitted.

Online Learning:

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no lecture component, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. There are no face-to-face meetings.  Please be prepared to spend 8 - 12 hours per week on coursework for this class

IS AN ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

First, go to the Cuesta College Canvas Tutorial (self paced), there are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy:

Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email, phone or messaging to individuals; and virtual office hours.

Students in this course are expected to log in a minimum of twice a week for discussions; to read announcements; and for accessing all class materials i.e. your text is electronic accessed through Canvas.

Netiquette (or Online Professionalism or other synonym) and Online Course Participation

  • Use respectful and appropriate language in your forum discussions.
  • Please do not use texting language (ex:lol, @name, etc).
  • Avoid CAPS as they come across like YOU'RE SCREAMING.
  • You are expected to read all forum posts.
  • You are to respond to the required number of posts for each forum.
  • All messages are public, so be careful and courteous when you post.
  • Make your posts thorough and your replies as well. Replies must be a question or a reply that furthers a discussion. Replies such as “Great Post” or “I Agree” will not be accepted for credit. Every response needs to further a conversation.
  • Complete sentences and thoughts are mandatory for forum posts.
  • Use a person's name when you reply to their post.

RESPECT FOR DIVERSE VIEWS:

We all come from unique backgrounds that have shaped our experiences and perspectives. Students in our class will be diverse in ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and country of origin. Please be sensitive and respectful of one another’s values and viewpoints. Let’s be curious and interested as well as kind. If someone does offend you, please be gracious and let the Instructor or student know privately and gently so they can have a chance to remedy the problem and learn from the situation. This is how empathy is developed and learning/personal growth occurs.

College & Course Policies:

Grading: Points, Policy and Assignment Expectations

All assignments must be turned in through Canvas. No emailed or messaged assignments will be accepted.

Triple check to make sure that ALL items you are trying to submit are fully uploaded. If you are having trouble submitting multiple items I suggest combining them into one word document if possible. If that is not a possibility please feel free to contact College Support Services (see above).

Assignments will be graded on evidence of course learning (including specific information, concepts, and terms from the textbook), clarity, quality of thought, and quality of your writing (spelling and grammar). Writing is expected to be college level.

I do NOT accept late work under unless there is an emergency (emergencies are not considered lack of preparation, forgetfulness, mix ups, busy schedules, vacations, etc). Discussion boards will NEVER be allowed to be made up late as they are just that – discussions. If you show up late to a face-to-face discussion your counterpart may have left and the discussion can’t happen. This is also true of online discussion boards. Please make sure that you are prepared for this class and the amount of work for the duration of the course.

Academic Honesty Policy:

Plagiarism, cheating, and other violations of ethical student behavior are serious actions in a learning community. Students who abuse the online learning system are subject to the Cuesta College Student Code of Conduct and may be removed from the course.

In addition to my course policy, please note all students attending San Luis Obispo County Community College District at any district site and when representing Cuesta College in any off-campus activity, assume an obligation to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner compatible with the Student Code of conduct. Please review the Cuesta College Student Code of conduct.

Add / Drop Policy:

Students who fail to log-in, miss the first week of assignments and/or have not completed coursework/attended class for 2+ weeks, or have not submitted 60% of assigned chapter work, at any point in the semester, may be dropped from the course without notice. You will be automatically dropped from the course if you do not purchase AND sign-up for the McGraw-Hill online Textbook.

In addition to my policy, please review the Cuesta policy for drops

Waitlist Policy:

If you are on the course waitlist there are two things you need to know:

  1. Check regularly to see where you are on the list. When your name comes to the top, you have 24 hours to register before it goes to the next name.
  2. I will send an add code on the Friday before fall semester begins. This will go to your My.Cuesta.edu email. Register as soon as you get the Add Code.

In addition to my course specific procedures, please review Cuesta’s waitlist procedure and instructions.

Accommodations:

This course is designed using an accessible Learning Management System, and course materials have been created with ADA compliance in mind. If you have a disability and might need accommodations in this class such as extended time on exams or other resources.
