Welcome to ABOD 170/570 Auto Body Repair 1

This course studies the fundamentals of the automotive collision industry.

Emphasis will be on vehicle construction, measuring, collision damage analysis, estimating, and types of repairs. This includes various auto collision repairs, understanding of collision repair equipment, techniques, health, safety, and environmental concerns. Emphasis of lab exercises will be on (but not limited to) the applications and techniques of collision repair materials, dent repair, plastic repair, and techniques and of various other collision repairs. Introduction into various automotive trades and careers will also be explored.

Instructor Contact Expectations: The best way to contact me is my Cuesta email shown above. After class starts, all communication should be through Canvas Inbox or Cuesta email. I will do my best to respond to your emails in a timely manner during weekdays. During busy times of the semester, the response time may increase. On weekends, I will do my best to get back to you, but I cannot guarantee a rapid response.

 

Learning Management System:  Canvas, a web-based learning management system will provide the framework for this course. Canvas will be used to share information including assignments, discussions, grades, files, and to receive and send course materials. Using the Canvas communication tools, you can send messages and share materials and ideas with me and other course participants via discussions.

Collision students should register and create an account with the I-CAR student PPE program. We will be using these modules and industry certificates are available upon completion of these modules. Instructions for this will be discussed on the first day orientation meeting.   

 

Course Environment: This hybrid course will be using Canvas to deliver class and study information. This will include assignments, study directives, quizzes and to host course links.  This will be in addition to in-person lab periods where the current course topic material is explored in a hands-on environment. Lab periods are Monday’s and Wednesday’s 12:00 – 1:50 room 4602. Please plan on meeting in room 4602 at 12:00  August 17th, 2020 for an orientation of the class. We will be discussing class procedures and expectations on that date. Please make every effort to attend that day. Please notify me prior thru email if this is not possible.  Face masks are always required when on campus. Technology Requirements- to be successful in this class you must have:

• A reliable Internet connection
• a basic understanding of email, web navigation and online communication to succeed in this course.

 

Getting Started/ Accessing Canvas:  Prior to the Monday’s class start, August 17^th, 2020, you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder that class will be starting. You can access Canvas from any computer by going to the Cuesta College (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. website then clicking on Canvas. button at the top left.  On the College main web page you can also see your My Cuesta (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. page where you can also open Canvas.  Do not bookmark / favorite the Canvas site after your login, or you may get an error message next time you try to log in.

Once logged into Canvas, select the course you wish to enter.  Once you have entered this course, you will open the classes Home page.

Online Learning: 

This course will be delivered partially online using Canvas. Most all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) will be submitted online.

If you have never received any online instruction or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself and others. Online classes are not characteristically easier, but they are much more convenient for many students.  Since there is no lecture period component, your time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, and studying are required.  If you want to get a better idea of what online instruction will be like,  check out these Online Readiness Resources (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to take a "self-assessment”. Here there are many resources there to help you understand the basics for an online class and the skills necessary for success. I know this new online stuff is a lot. We all will do our best to make this a good learning experience. My intent is for everyone to gain knowledge and understanding about the Automotive Collision Industry. The class will explore the practices and procedures required in industry. Please have patience. I come from the automotive collision industry, so this new style of online is challenging. With your help and determination, we will all get through it. Please hang in there.   

 

Regular Effective Contact policy: Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email or messaging to individuals; and virtual office hours.

Note that once class starts most written communication will take place within Canvas. Additionally, if you are using a web access email account or any email account with high spam settings, it is likely that you might not receive some initial emails that detail important class information.

Lab Periods: If lab periods are approved for this semester, lab periods will involve face to face instruction in appropriately configured lab setting optimized for prevailing County Department of Health guidelines. Lab periods will begin and end on schedule and will be focused on accomplishing lab tasks.

 

Course Description:  Topics will include but not limited to:

• Safety in the shop and the collision industry.
• Presents the fundamentals of automotive body repair.
• Emphasis is placed on developing knowledge and manipulative skill necessary for gainful employment in the auto body repair industry. 
• Collision industry/Auto Body tools and equipment.
• Auto Body construction.
• Various types of welding found in the collision industry.
• Auto Body metalworking methods.
• Automotive plastic repair.
• Collision repair O.E.M. procedures.
• Also, other vehicle information and systems may be explored (such as ADAS and Hybrid considerations and safety.)

Supplemental Materials for the class: Each student must bring and wear their own face covering/masks. Also, students must wear Z-87 approved eye wear when in the lab.
