Course Description

Welcome to ESL 701/702! This class is for beginning level ESL students. In this course, you will develop introductory English literacy and study skills. You will also build basic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills necessary to function successfully in everyday situations.  

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify, copy, and produce the letters of the alphabet and numbers (701).
  2. Complete simple forms that include basic personal information (701).
  3. Respond to simple questions demonstrating an understanding of familiar vocabulary (701).
  4. Read basic texts (702).
  5. Write simple sentences with basic personal information (702).
  6. Ask and respond to simple questions demonstrating an understanding of basic vocabulary (702). 

Course Environment

This online course will meet using the video conference tool Zoom during scheduled class time (Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-800pm).  You can join from the website with a meeting ID.  There is also a phone app you can download.

We use Canvas to:

  • Access learning materials, resources, and video links.
  • Complete assignments and quizzes. 
  • See the grade book and keep track of your progress.
  • Email your classmates and your instructor.

Before class starts on August 18th, you will receive a text message reminder:

  • I will send you the link for the first Zoom meeting. 
  • Continuing Education staff will help you log onto Canvas (https://cuesta.instructure.com/). 
  • I will demonstrate Canvas features on Zoom in the first few weeks of class.  We have a tutor to help you. 
  • You can contact me by email or text with any questions.

Textbook and Materials  

  1. Ventures Basic Student Book and Workbook Value Pack, 3rd Edition, ISBN: 9781108577304.
  1. Your learning environment is best accessed from a desktop or laptop computer, Chromebook, IPad, or tablet using a Firefox or Chrome browser.

Chromebooks are available to students for semester checkout!

Just drop into the library to get one Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm:

Participating regularly in the Zoom class sessions is important for your success. You are responsible for all work even if you are absent. Contact me or a classmate for information about the work that you missed.

Course Evaluation

This is a non-credit course. Each student receives a P (Pass), SP (Satisfactory Progress), or NP (No Pass). In order to pass, you must achieve a 70% or higher on the course objectives.

Add / Drop Policy

This is a noncredit class with managed enrollment.  You can add the class until the end of the second week of the semester.

Students who do not attend or participate during the first two weeks of class may be dropped from the course unless you contact me or the ESL Outreach Office (805-546-3941).

You must inform me if you cannot participate in class. Students who fail to notify me will be dropped from the class after two weeks of absence / non-participation.
