In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use the Ally accessibility tool in Canvas to quickly identify and improve accessibility issues in your course files and pages. We’ll walk through Ally’s course accessibility report, what the indicators mean, and the most common fixes (like improving headings, tables, PDFs, and document structure). You’ll also learn how to use alternative formats and how small changes can make a big difference for student access.

Bring: A Canvas course with a few posted files (PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoints) so you can practice making real improvements during the session.

Bring an active Canvas course (or a course you’re building) and we’ll map a simple, repeatable weekly routine that supports Regular Substantive Interaction (RSI). You’ll design a “weekly rhythm” for announcements that include touchpoints, and instruction that builds instructor presence, and feedback cadence. Leave with a concrete plan you can apply immediately to one module or week in your course. Have you explored where you currently are with RSI? You can take this self assessment as a starting place.

This workshop is a practical tour of Cuesta’s Google for Education environment—what’s available, what’s enabled, and how to get started confidently. We’ll highlight the core productivity tools you can use right away (including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and shared drives if available), along with the features and settings that are turned on for Cuesta accounts. You’ll learn how to access Google for Education using your Cuesta credentials, where to find key apps, and simple tips for organizing and sharing files securely with students and colleagues.

Bring your Canvas course materials and get individualized help improving accessibility. We’ll help you spot common issues and make quick, meaningful improvements to pages and files (Word, PDF, PowerPoint), images (alt text), headings, links, tables, color contrast, and captions. If your course has Ally enabled, we can also use Ally indicators and reports to prioritize the highest-impact fixes.

InstructureCon and Online Teaching Conference (OTC) Take-Aways
Faculty who attended the Online Teaching Conference (OTC)
and InstructureCon will share key takeaways, new tools, and
emerging practices in online teaching and learning. Presenters
will briefly highlight what they learned, including updates to
Canvas, strategies for increasing student engagement,
accessibility improvements, AI-enhanced workflows, and
innovative approaches to course design. Participants will gain
practical ideas they can bring back to their classrooms, learn

Better Discussions + Easier Grading: Harmonize Training

This training will cover the basics for instructors utilizing the Harmonize Discussion and Engagement tool in their Canvas courses. The focus will be on how to add Harmonize to classes, how to participate in Harmonize discussions, and how to grade discussions.  Features to be highlighted include:

End-of-Semester Tips & Tricks

As the semester winds down, it’s important to close out your Canvas course with confidence. This quick and practical session will walk you through the key steps to ensure your course ends smoothly for both you and your students.

We’ll cover what you need to know about course end dates and visibility, how to review and finalize your Gradebook, the process for handling incomplete , and the best way to prepare your course for copying into the next term. You’ll leave with a clear checklist to guide you through the close-out process and reduce last-minute surprises.

Home Page Makeover – Design Challenge Edition

Your Canvas course home page is the first impression students get when they log in. A clear, welcoming, and well-structured home page can reduce confusion, improve navigation, and set a positive tone for learning. But what difference does design really make?

In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the impact of design by comparing a basic Canvas home page built with standard tools to an enhanced home page makeover that uses banners, navigation buttons, and visual design principles. To make it fun, two faculty volunteers will compete in a timed “Home Page Makeover Challenge”—each working against the clock to transform a course home page using different design approaches.

RSI Essentials: Designing Regular & Substantive Interaction

Federal guidelines require that online and distance education courses include Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) between instructors and students. But RSI goes beyond checking a box—it’s about building meaningful connections that support student success.

This powerful tool allows you to quickly create and apply templates, build out modules in minutes, and keep your course organized and consistent. In this workshop, you’ll also explore the Due Date Adjuster, which makes it easy to update assignment deadlines from semester to semester—no more clicking through every individual item.

 Managing Online Media Library in Panopto

 

Do you have videos scattered across courses or recordings that are hard to track down? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to efficiently manage your media library in Panopto so that your content is easy to organize, locate, and embed directly into your course materials.

We’ll explore strategies for structuring your library with folders and naming conventions, using search and tagging features, and managing permissions so your media is ready when you need it. You’ll also practice embedding Panopto videos into Canvas pages, assignments, and modules to give students seamless access to your resources. Join us for an informative workshop on using Honorlock, where we'll guide you through the essential steps of turning on settings and demonstrate a sample exam session. This session is designed to empower faculty members with the knowledge and skills needed to seamlessly integrate Honorlock into their online courses.

Teaching in the Age of AI: A Discussion on Clarity and Academic Honesty

As generative AI tools become increasingly accessible,
instructors face new challenges in setting clear expectations
around their use in coursework. This interactive session,
hosted by the AI in Relation to Academic Honesty Taskforce,
will equip faculty with strategies to communicate AI usage
guidelines effectively, recognize potential misuse, and
thoughtfully address situations when expectations aren’t met.
We’ll introduce the newly adopted AI Usage Syllabus Policy
options— Restricted, Conditional, and Open—and explore how
to include additional information to tailor them to your course
needs. The session will also cover best practices for each
option, including student guidance and training, approaches
for recognizing AI-generated work, and fostering a culture of
academic integrity.

This engaging session will demonstrate how to add dynamic
learning activities inside Canvas using the new Lucid for
Education integration. Participants will learn how to
brainstorm, annotate, collaborate, scaffold, and best of all
explore hundreds of ready-to-use templates!
Through Canvas, two Lucid tools are available:
Lucidspark and Lucidchart.
• Lucidspark is a digital whiteboard designed to foster
collaboration and enhance student engagement during
class activities.

Cuesta DE Certification Options

The Online Education Committee has established 2 options for certification. The options include a fully online facilitated courses and a self paced option. The training is offered every semester; the online courses starts around the third week of the semester in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Additionally once faculty is certified and established teaching online, they may participate in the OEI Alignment Academy. Faculty my select Flex Credit or compensation (if approved). 

Prior to teaching online instructors are required to meet teaching qualifications according to AP4105 and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (recommended to complete training two semesters prior to assignment).

Please complete and submit the appropriate form. Once received by the DE Standard Subcommittee, the form will be emailed to your chair, and they will forward to your dean. Once the training is completed, the DE Standards Subcommittee will sign the form and return it to you for your records and notify HR of your completion.  Preregistration is required and fills quickly!! Email cwilshus@cuesta.edu with questions. 

Cuesta College - Teaching Online Certificate (TOC): 

Description: This in House training allows participants to explore the guiding principle of course design and delivery that ensures an equitable and inclusive online learning environment to support the success of diverse students online.

    • 6-week course - requires a 10-hour weekly commitment; Meets AP4105 # 4. 
    • Delivered asynchronously through Canvas with interactions with mentors and colleagues. No in person or live sessions. 
    • Must complete the Online Education Legal Requirements module and quiz with a score of 100 %. 
    • The course provides faculty with an in-depth approach to course design, explore online learning theory, online course design, create support for the success of diverse students, foster inclusion through student-centered activities and communications, apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts, identify the skills you will need to make your course both technically accessible and usable to a broad range of students. 
    • The hands-on activities will give you the chance to master using Canvas and develop your orientation module and one content module in a Canvas sandbox that may be transferred to a teaching course if desired. 
    • Participants will earn the Teaching Online Certificate (TOC) upon completion of course activities. The certificate will be valid for as long as you teach at Cuesta College.

@ONE Certification Pathway

Participants can choose to complete our 12-week course, Online Teaching & Design (OTD), or the series of four, 4-week courses listed below (4x4). Digital Badges are awarded for completing either the 12-week course or each of the four courses.

Participants can choose between two pathways through one of two pathways:

Pathway 1:  Take the 12-week Online Teaching & Design (OTD) course. This is the best option if you want a streamlined experience.

Pathway 2: Take the four-week courses (4x4) listed below. This is the best option if you want to spread out your coursework and complete it in shorter chunks.

Equivalency / Self-Paced Teaching Online Certificate (SPTOC):

Description: Participation in SPTOC is for faculty have completed training or professional development on their own, taken workshops related to online teaching topics, or self-studied effective distance education delivery. SPTOC recognizes the effort of faculty who created asynchronous or synchronous online course and believe their course meets the Minimum DE course structure and content requirements.

  • Self Paced - Meets AP4105 # 3 and can be designated as temporary if requested.
  • Does not require enrollment in a facilitated course and is designed to be a self-paced. Must use the checklist to self-identify that their course meets the same standards as the Teaching Online Certificate (TOC). 
  • Must complete the Online Education Legal Requirements module and quiz with a score of 100 %. 
  • May access to mentors for questions and guidance.
  • Faculty should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of DE definitions and regulations, ADA compliance, and Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI).
  • Will be awarded either a Teaching Online Certificate (TOC) or an Emergency Certificate (SLEC) or (DLEC) depending on the review by the Instructional Designer or CC-POCR

OEI Academy - Cougar Capstone OEI Badge:

The OEI Academy is designed for faculty who have taught online for at least one semester, who are ready to transition their course from a basic to exemplary level.  Participants will revise their existing course(s) based on equitable teaching practices in four areas of the CVC-OEI Rubric; (A) Content Presentation, (B) Interaction, (C) Assessment, (D) Accessibility.

  • Delivered asynchronously through Canvas with interaction among mentors and colleagues addressing the major factors that impact student success.
  • Based on the exemplary criteria from the CVC-OEI’s Course Design Rubric. 
  • 40-hour commitment over an agreed upon time period and requires presenting a fully aligned course for review by the CC-POCR.
  • Awarded a digital badge that will be visible on the CVC Course Exchange.
