Online Education Initiative and Course Design Rubric

In 2014 the State's Chancellor's Office has been involved in the Online Education Initiative (OEI) which approved a Course Design Rubric, a set of quality standards for courses that will become part of the State's OEI Course Exchange.

The Cuesta College Distant Education Committee which is comprised of faculty, staff, administrators and students has elected to use this rubric to help faculty evaluate the needs of effective online instruction or blended classrooms with design components for high quality courses. In addition the rubric can guide faculty in making curriculum and technology choices.

While this rubric is being used primarily for courses being submitted to the OEI Course Exchange program, being able to apply this rubric to the design of your online courses can lead to more successful experiences in online teaching and learning. If you strive to include all the items in the Exemplary column of the Rubric, you will ensure your course meets Federal and State requirements for a quality course. It will also ensure that your students will have the most successful experience in your online class.

Additionally the OEI has developed The Peer Online Course Reviewer network which brings together highly trained individuals from across the 113 California Community Colleges in an effort to assess effectiveness of the design elements of online courses for the OEI Course Exchange. Request your Peer Review from our very own Certified OEI Course Reviewer; Cynthia Wilshusen.
