Edit the Banner Title
About banner titles
The banner title element combines colorful shapes and text to convey essential information about the current page and its context. Specific regions within the banner are designated for five supported text fields: Prefix 1, Prefix 2, Title, Subtitle, and Description. Let’s break it down:
- Title: Reserved for the page title (note that the Canvas page title is hidden by default).
- Prefix 1 and 2: Use these to provide contextual information for the current page—think course names, module titles, and more.
- Subtitle and Description: While less commonly included, they’re available if you need them.
Important!
The key to success with banner titles is editing within the DesignPlus Sidebar, not the Canvas editor. Modifying the text directly in Canvas often disrupts the formatting. Instead, utilize the Content panel in the Banner Title tool, as explained in the exercise below.
Practice what you've learned
From here on out, you'll be asked to practice the skills you've learned on previous pages before moving on to the exercise for the current feature. If you need help, open the DesignPLUS Task Instructions page in a new browser tab.
- Apply the theme you selected previously to the current page.
Exercise: Add or update text in the banner title
After adding a banner title to a page, depending on the page’s purpose, you may need to update the prefix and/or title. You can also take advantage of the optional subtitle and description fields. Follow these instructions to modify the text in the banner title:
- If the page isn't already in edit mode, click Edit to modify this page. Then return here.
- If the Sidebar isn't already visible, turn it on.
- Place your cursor anywhere within the banner title element at the top of the page.
- In the Sidebar main menu, select the Edit Current Element ( ) tab.
- Confirm that Banner Title is selected as the active tool. If not, select it.
- On the the Edit Current Element ( ) page, open the Content panel if it's not already open. You will see a list of the available fields and the current values in each:
- Delete the text in both Prefix fields. Then enter "From Drab to Fab" in Prefix 1 so it matches the other pages in this course and leave Prefix 2 empty. As soon as you take your course out of the Prefix 1 field, the page will automatically update.
About the "Name" and "##" Prefixes
The default values for Prefix 1 and Prefix 2 (“Name” and “#”) are useful when creating content that will be duplicated in the Module Builder utility in the Cidi Labs Multi-Tool Links to an external site.. However, for pages that won’t be duplicated with the Module Builder, replace one or both fields with meaningful information about the course or module. - The Title should have been auto-populated with the saved page title. Leave it as is.
- The Subtitle and Description fields are used less frequently, but they’re available if needed. For now, add a short subtitle and a longer description for the page, and observe the changes to the banner title element. Once again, the page will update as soon as you move your cursor out of each field.
- Delete the text in both Prefix fields. Then enter "From Drab to Fab" in Prefix 1 so it matches the other pages in this course and leave Prefix 2 empty. As soon as you take your course out of the Prefix 1 field, the page will automatically update.
- Save your changes to see the read only version of the page and return here.
You may have noticed that the large Canvas page title for the page is automatically hidden, so users see just one title instead of two. If you need to force the Canvas page title to display for some reason, edit the banner title element and click the Show Canvas Title box in the lower left of the Content panel. - Save the page again to see how the page will look for students.
