Using Zoom for Student Interaction

Using Zoom for Student Interaction

Ask Student to Sign Up for an account:  This is only necessary if you are asking student to record the session, they don't need an account to join your zoom sessions.

Student can get a free Zoom (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. account. Select the Basic, Free option if they haven't already done this.

Important to Know:

To record a meeting, one person (usually the host), must use a computer. You are not able to record a meeting with your phone using the free Zoom account. Others can participate using their phone, but whomever is recording must use their computer.

Scheduling a Meeting

First, the students should agree on a day/time for the interaction/meeting. Next, decide who will host the meeting. The Host schedules the meeting. Here's how:

Recording the Meeting

Don't forget to record the meeting. You will be able to record the meeting to your computer as an mp4 file which you can then submit to Canvas. The host records the meeting unless the other requests permission to record from the host. Here's how to record the meeting: Recording a Zoom Meeting Links to an external site.

To find and/or change the default recording location for Local Recordings

You can find your default recording location for Local Recordings in your Zoom Client settings. If you delete a recorded meeting from the app, this may be where it is stored on your computer, if you have not changed the default recording location since the meeting.

  1. Login to the Zoom client.
  2. Click Settings.

Have a Chromebook?

Your chromebook does not have enough memory space to save a Zoom recording onto so you will need to get the free Screencasitfy for your chromebook. Here's a document with instructions: Download Screencastify Instructions.

And here is a Youtube tutorial for recording with Screencastify:

Run your Zoom meeting, don't use the Zoom record meeting function rather use Screencastify to record your screen while you're talking in the meeting (either with you as the only participant or with a buddy). Upload the video made from Screencastify to Canvas--you're done :).
