Instructor Contact Expectations

The best and fastest way to contact me is email.  I will generally respond to your emails within 24 hours during the week.  During busy times of the semester, the response time may increase to 48 hours.  On weekends, I will do my best to get back to you ASAP but I cannot guarantee an expeditious response.

Course Environment

This course is designed as an ONLINE class and it is not a distance education course. There are no scheduled meeting times.

This online course will be using a Web-based Learning Management System called Canvas as the primary method to disseminate information. Canvas provides the framework for the course including lecture material, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups.

Accessing the Course

You will see your course in Canvas on the first day of class. You can access Canvas by clicking on Canvas from the top bar of the Cuesta homepage (www.cuesta.edu), or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar.

If you are not familiar with logging into canvas, please refer to the Canvas Quick Reference Guide.Links to an external site. Once logged into Canvas you will be directed on where to get started. Be sure to read all the information provided on the course home page and in the Start Here Module.

If you are having difficulty logging into Canvas after the class begins or need assistance please take a moment to look over the Cuesta Help PageLinks to an external site. or contact technical support at this email address support@my.cuesta.edu.

Online Learning

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no lecture component, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. There are no face-to-face meetings.  Please be prepared to spend 8 - 12 hours per week on coursework for this class

IS an ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

Go to the Cuesta College Canvas Tutorial (self-paced)Links to an external site.,  there are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy

To comply with college and educational guidelines, I wanted to take a moment and explain how I ensure regular and effective contact with you during the course.

·       You will receive individual feedback on your assignments.

·       I use Twitter regularly and you are welcome to follow my postings and message me directly. My twitter handle is @microeconomics.

·       I will often post announcements that are related to assignments that are coming up or are due, and I will also provide announcements with more generalized feedback regarding an assignment if I notice a pattern in an assignment, etc.

·       Announcements can also include topics such a news articles, YouTube Videos, Podcasts, etc.., that I feel are relevant to our class material.

·       I have regular assignments that are designed as a time for you to reflect back on the week and have a quick "check in" with me on how things are going. This is less formal than other assignments and is a low point, and low time burden activity.

·       I have 2 surveys during the course (1 for short courses, at end of course) that allow you to help me improve my course and to provide a way for you to send comments my way anonymously. These surveys are midway and at the end of the course.

·       If I notice that you are falling behind or having difficultly, I may message you directly and ask to talk via telephone, Face Time, Skype, Google Duo, or any other method that is mutually acceptable.

Finally, I am available via multiple methods of communication. I do ask that you email me first so that we may arrange a time and a method that works for both of us. I realize that many of you are working or have other time commitments and that can pose challenges to “connecting” with your instructor (me). I am committed to finding a time that works, even if it is on the weekend, early in the morning or late at night. I am always willing to find a way to help you be successful in the course.

Technical Support

Cuesta students are encouraged to direct all technical support inquiries to  support@my.cuesta.edu. If you are having issues with Canvas, or email support@instructure.com.

If you are having difficulty viewing the course or logging in, it may be because you are not using the correct url: https://cuesta.instructure.com/ or you are using your phone or using an unsupported browser (like Safari).

Your learning environment is best accessed from a desktop or laptop computer, using Edge, Firefox, or Chrome.  This may solve your problem!  Please review the browser requirements and minimum computer specificationsLinks to an external site..

Academic Honesty Policy

Academic Honesty is essential to the academic community. Students expect that Cuesta College faculty be fair, truthful, and trustworthy. Faculty expect that Cuesta College students share these same values. Students who violate these principles by cheating, plagiarizing, or acting in other academically dishonest ways are subject to disciplinary procedures. Below are some examples of academically dishonest behavior. If you are unclear about a specific situation, ask first before submitting work.

Examples of Academic Dishonesty:

  • Copying from another student’s exam
  • Giving answers during a test to another student
  • Using notes or electronic devices during an exam when prohibited
  • Taking a test for someone else
  • Submitting another student’s work as your own, e.g. copying a computer fle that contains another student’s own work
  • Knowingly allowing another student to copy/use your computer file(s) as his or her own work
  • Completing an assignment for another student
  • Plagiarizing or “kidnapping” other people’s thoughts, words, speeches or artistic works by not acknowledging them through proper documentation (quotes or a citation)

At the discretion of the instructor, students caught being academically dishonest may receive a failing grade on the assignments in question, be dropped from the class, or be failed in the course. I will also report any acts of academic dishonesty to the Vice President of Student Services and College Centers, the Dean of the North County Campus and South County Center on the North County Campus, or designee.

Student Responsibility:

All students attending San Luis Obispo County Community College District at any campus site and when representing Cuesta College in any of-campus activity, assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the Student Code of Conduct and Academic Honesty Regulations, and the Student Computer Technology Access Agreement. Specifc rules, regulations, and applicable penalties for violation of the Student Code of Conduct (California Education Code Title V, Sections 66300, 66301, 76030 - 76038), are located in the Cuesta College catalog and as posted on the Cuesta College website. Each student has the responsibility to be aware of college regulations.. Please review the Cuesta College Student Code of conductLinks to an external site..

Add / Drop Policy:

Online students are required by federal and state regulations to participate regularly. Logging in by itself is not sufficient. If you miss three consecutive assignments, you may be dropped. Please contact me in advance should any issue arise that may require your inability to participate. Participation is for the benefit of you and your classmates. Participation includes:

  • Posting to discussion boards
  • Submitting assignments
  • Taking quizzes and exams

In addition to my policy, please review the Cuesta policy for drops

Waitlist Policy

I will add students whenever possible. If there is space in another instructor’s class, I highly suggest that you enroll in that class to ensure you have a space. Each instructor at this campus is very knowledgeable and you will learn the best information available (yes, economics!)  Your experience in every class is determined by how much effort you put into it, not just the instructor. In addition to my course specific procedures, please review Cuesta’s waitlist procedure and instructionsLinks to an external site..
