¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español 201 (en línea). This course is a fully-online, asynchronous course with no mandatory class meetings. We will be working primarily on two website to complete your assignments, Canvas and Connect. This course participates in first day materials access, so you will not need to purchase the book separately. You will automatically get access to the digital book when you register.

Time Expectations

This is a 5-unit class so you should expect to spend about 10-12 hours per week studying and completing the assignments. There are no mandatory meetings, and assignments will be due on Sundays and Thursdays, except during the summer (Sundays only).

Scheduling

There are two regular assignments during the course: 

  1. Weekly video partner chats with another student in the class. I realize that this can sometimes be difficult with different schedules, but it is necessary practice. It will be your responsibility to set these up and showing up to your scheduled time. 
  2. Final oral interview with me. This is a great opportunity to show me what  you've learned during the course of the semester. This will take place at the end of the term and count towards your final exam. 

Course Description

Presents a topic-based, introductory language acquisition course in standard contemporary Spanish, with emphasis on listening comprehension, oral interaction, culture centered readings, and writing of basic Spanish. Transfer: CSU; UC. 5 Units.

Course Outline

All the work is done online. The textbook is called Tu Mundo and we cover six chapters, with each chapter being about three weeks long.  For each chapter, you will complete the following: • Video Tutorials for grammar and vocabulary (with quizzes) • Tarea (homework) • LearnSmart activities (digital flashcards) • Discussion posts • Video Chats  (recorded partner chat) • Exams

Required Text Book(s)/Materials

You do not need to buy the book! You will automatically get access to the digital book when you register for the class.

  1. Tu Mundo: español sin fronteras 3rd edition custom student edition textbook.
  2. Connect code w/LearnSmart (Online homework through McGraw-Hill; included with textbook)
  3. A good bilingual Spanish/English dictionary (Free dictionary wordreference.com)
  4. Canvas will be used for course information and to turn in some assignments.
  5. A computer less than six years old with reliable internet access.
  6. A webcam and headphones with recording capabilities.
  7. You should check your Cuesta College email regularly.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate listening comprehension of level-appropriate, topic-based materials in Spanish.
  2. Demonstrate reading comprehension of level-appropriate, topic-based texts in Spanish.
  3. Convey verbally the meaning of topic-centered, level-appropriate materials in Spanish.
  4. Write complete sentences and brief paragraphs in Spanish referencing a variety of social and cultural situations presented in this level of the Spanish program.
  5. Describe and discuss various basic aspects of Spanish–speaking cultures.
