How to Scan

When uploading homework or posting a question in a forum then please note:

  • Scan your files at 100dpi and Grayscale if color scans are too big.  Anything more than 100dpi just makes the file too large for me to quickly download.  Some scanners won't scan to grayscale. Never use black/white as too much detail gets lost.
  • Your goal is to have each page less than 100KB.  If your file has 10 pages then the total files size shouldn't be more than 1MB.
  • Converting to grayscale will greatly reduce the size of your file.  You can do it either through your scanner software or after scanning through Adobe Acrobat.  Since everyone has a different scanner I can't show you how to do that but if you want to do it via Adobe Acrobat then check out this video:  How to convert PDF files to Grayscale using Acrobat pro 2017Links to an external site.
  • All problems for that section need to be contained in one pdf file, no zip files.
  • If you are using the real "Adobe Acrobat" program, click on "File", "Save as other...", "Reduced Size PDF...", then selected "Acrobat 10 and later....".  I have seen file sizes drop to 1/10 th of the original size.

  • If you have problems with the file size or merging multiple pdfs into one file you might try this free site: www.easypdf.comLinks to an external site.
  • Most scanners will allow you to scan directly to pdf without having to do any conversions.
  • In room 3400, the open computer lab, you can use Adobe Acrobat to combine separate pdf's into one file.
  • Scanners are available in rm 3400. The scanner does a super job reducing the file size and maintaining a high level of clarity.
  • Scan the problems in order with the "Homework Checklist" on top.
  • It is okay to use a phone app such as camscanner but you may find it takes more time.
  • Check the pdf before you upload it to make sure it is readable.  If not you won't receive any credit.
  • If the image is too light you may have to adjust the contrast ratio or the brightness. If your scanner can't adjust the darkness or the contrast, then check out picmonkey.comLinks to an external site. . Of course you can also write darker.
  • If you don't know how to scan then see your instructor or the lab tech in rm 3400.
