Request for Proctoring

Most students enrolled in one of our online engineering classes will be taking the exams at Cuesta College on our San Luis Obispo, CA campus.  However your instructor may allow students to take exams at remote locations and you should verify this with them.  As you will find out arranging a proctor isn't a simple task and may take a week to get the exams schedule.

If you are taking the exams on campus then you do not need to read further, just show up for your exam in San Luis Obispo.  If that isn't the case and you need to use a proctor then please continue reading.

The option to have an exam proctored at a remote location is not a right of the student and the instructor has complete authority to decide if it will be allowed.  Your instructor does not get paid extra for coordinating proctored exams.  In order to satisfy accreditation concerns, Cuesta must be 100% sure that the student taking the test is actually the student who is signed up for the course.:

  • It is the students responsibility to find and schedule a proctor that meets the guidelines given here.
  • Proctoring is only allowed in the US.
  • Start the proctoring request right away, preferably before the term starts.
  • Schedule the proctoring test to be administered on the same day and time listed in the syllabus.  Failure to do so will result in an F on the test.  Students do not have the authority to make any change to the the day and time of the test.
  • Verify that the proctor will accept the exams to be sent to them the day before the start of the exam. The proctor must be willing to schedule your appointment without having the exam ahead of time, if not please find another proctor.
  • If a student is authorized for additional time (disabilities, etc), approval must be made by Cuesta's DSPS office. Please allow several weeks for DSPS to review your documents.
  • Refer to the syllabus for dates and times. Sorry no exceptions, even if you are working. I have to make sure that a student taking the test at one location doesn't tell another student at a different location what is on the test.
  • Make sure you take a non-graphing calculator to the test. Check this out for approved calculators: http://ncees.org/exams/calculator-policy/Links to an external site.Links to an external site. If you bring an unapproved calculator to the test you will not be allowed to take the exam and there are no make-ups.
  • Make sure the proctor writes the model number of your calculator on the test.
  • Make sure the proctor immediately emails your entire exam after you complete it. Your exam will not be accepted if your exam is received more than 2 hours after the exam.  Don't leave the proctoring site until it has been emailed.
  • Acceptable proctors are testing centers at a college, Sylvan Learning Centers, etc. The proctor needs to be someone whose main job is proctoring from a national recognized proctoring firm.  Individuals who offer proctoring services are not allowed, private proctoring companies must be nationally known.  Remember your instructor has the final say in who is allowed to proctor.
  • Your boss, teacher, priest, HR Department, librarians, ProctorU, coach, department advisor, department chair, etc are NOT acceptable proctors.
  • In rare cases a teacher may be permitted if the Cuesta instructor personally knows the other teacher.
  • If you are not able to find an acceptable proctor to your instructor by the due date set, then you will need to take the exam at the Cuesta campus in San Luis Obispo, CA or drop the class. Remember your instructor has the ultimate say so in who proctors your exam.
  • Make sure to take a photo ID to the exam center.
  • You are responsible for paying any fees that the proctoring center may charge.
  • Contact the proctor the day before the exam to verify that they have received the exam.
  • If you are late to the exam then that time will cut into your exam so please make sure to arrive early in case something should happen.
  • There are no make-ups.
  • The instructor reserves the right to have a student retake a test if they feel the integrity of the test has been compromised.
  • Failure to follow any of these rules will result in an F in the class.
  • Should you find any discrepancies in the proctoring request process then you must let your instructor know, don't assume you know what was meant. Let your instructor make the final decision/clarification.
  • Send your instructor a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) BEFORE the exam and they will mail you your graded exam back.  Requests sent after the exam will not be accepted. Mail a package with enough SASE's for each test.  For example if there are four tests then mail all four SASE at the same time.  We suggest the SASE's be #10 envelopes with one stamp each.  If you are taking the test with DSPS (Disabled Student Programs and Services) then hand deliver your SASE to your instructor before the start of the exam.  Exams will not be returned during office hours.  Send SASE's to:

Once you have made the arrangements, log into the class on Canvas and click on the link "Request for Proctoring and DSPS students", then click on the link "Submit Assignment".  If you need to change something that was previously entered then that is fine provided the due date hasn't passed and you must let your instructor know of the change in case the exam was already coordinated with the proctor. If you will be taking the exams in San Luis Obispo, CA with your instructor then do not complete this information.
