Instructor email

Coral Minton cminton@cuesta.edu

WELCOME!

I look forward to working with you. This course provides training and information to help with immediate and temporary emergency care in cases of accident or illness.

Our first meeting 1/26/26 is in person or on zoom. A zoom code will be available in an announcement in Canvas and via email. This meeting is to help facilitate course set-up through the Red Cross Learning Center. Students will enter email information as part of Red Cross portal access. Once set-up is complete, students can proceed through Red Cross online learning and take online quizzes as we move through skill demonstrations.

In-person meetings on 2/2, 2/9, 2/23 and 3/2 involve skill demonstrations with manikins etc. Meetings on 3/9 and 3/16 are to be determined (TBD) based on class size,  or need to make up a class.

This is a short course. Outcomes include obtaining Red Cross certification for Standard First Aid, CPR and AED. There is an academic critical thinking component to prepare a first aid/CPR safety plan based on lifestyle situations. When completed, the safety plan is be submitted on the Cuesta Canvas course page before the course closes in mid March.

Demonstrations are a required component to receive Red Cross certification. In person time is also a great time to ask questions about homework and online segments.

Due to class size and nature of this content, students will work with others to demonstrate skills. We break up into small groups to practice and complete the in-person demonstrations. We may stagger some meeting times during the later part of the demonstrations. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow for movement to demonstrate skills.

Online component

Online work includes reading and/or listening to Red Cross materials and taking quizzes. For most students, this takes about 4 hours to complete. Please attend our first in-person meeting to get set-up for the online course.

During class we will review several short videos with Red Cross practices for in-person skills. Due to our class size, it will take several days to learn and demonstrate different scenarios. As a health instructor I also will take time to go into more detail about various health conditions (ex. diabetes, allergies, heart disease and stroke) to provide a better understanding. This overview helps when analyzing a situation to make decisions during an emergency.

I realize that attending a night class can present challenges with family and work. Attending class in person is required to receive full certification by the Red Cross. Please email if there are problems or concerns with attending class. There is an option to make-up some of the demonstration testing prior to the course end date.

Please email if there are difficulties coming to class, or meeting deadlines. I am generally flexible with most deadlines. Online work and in person demonstrations must be completed to receive the Red Cross certificate and a passing grade.

Online learning management system

Cuesta’s Course learning management system is CANVAS. There is a self-paced tutorial that students may access NOW to get introduced to the learning environment. It walks students through a typical course layout and the common Canvas tools. The tutorial also provides resources on how to download applications, working with browsers, and more.

https://www.cuesta.edu/academics/distance/survey.html

During the first meeting I review basic functions in Canvas and the Red Cross learning center. It is encouraged to review the link above as an introduction. You can access CANVAS quickly by

  • going to mycuesta.edu
  • On the top of the page click on Canvas (green button)
  • Log in with your cuesta college username and password
  • Click on this class page to get started. (HSCI 204)

The Canvas app can be downloaded onto a phone. Canvas provides the framework for the course including links to documents, videos and presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups. Some aspects of Canvas do work better on a computer so it may be helpful to have something available. There are computers available on campus.

Accessing Canvas: Prior to the course start date, you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder about our first class meeting. I will also let you know when the course page is open on Canvas.

If there is difficulty logging into Canvas and you need assistance please email me or technical support at this email address: support@my.cuesta.edu. If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself and ask for help.

DSPS Statement:

This course design is with an accessible Learning Management System. Course materials are prepared with ADA compliance in mind. Any student who feels they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, such as ability to demonstrate skills, should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Please contact Disabled Student Services & Programs at Building 3300 (546-3148) on SLO Campus or on North Campus (591-6215) to coordinate reasonable accommodations for documented disabilities. Doing so as soon as possible will help ensure accommodations in a timely manner. Please let me know if there is something I can do early in the course, to help accommodate your needs.

Red Cross does require a level of demonstration to receive certification. Any DSPS accommodations that they allow (TBD) are provided.
