Donatelle R.J., (2015) Access to Health, 16th Edition, Pearson ISBN: 978-013-5173794. Pearson publisher. The text is available at the Cuesta bookstore, online, as a rental or as an e-text.
I will use a second text titled "Culturally Competent Health Care", by Larry D. Purnell. There is access to a digital version (Transcultural Healthcare) that you can read for free, online through the Cuesta College library. The Cuesta library also has several hardcopies by Purnell that can be borrowed. Click "explore all editions and formats" and then scroll down for the digital version. Hardcopies will be available in the classroom for various activities. If you want a copy of this text, you can purchase any of Purnell's books through Amazon and other online platforms. The bookstore does not carry these as they are older texts.

Instructor's Add and drop policies
I am obligated to follow Cuesta's add/drop policies. There is a census deadline the first week to verify participation of enrolled students. Those who do not log into the course by midnight on the first Friday of class may be dropped. I generally send out multiple emails the first week of class. If there is no login or response by the first weekend of class, a student may be dropped. This is especially true if the course is full with a wait list.
Waitlisted students receive notification from mycuesta if a slot becomes available BEFORE the first day of class.
AFTER the first day of class, waitlisted students can expect an email from me regarding their status. Please respond when I reach out so that I know if you are still interested in the course. Waitlisted students who are silent and do not respond, don't get an add code after the course has started.
Therefore, if you want to add the course please email me. I will give out an add code if a slot becomes available. I appreciate persistence and patience, because slots usually become available in full classes by the second week of class. I will continue handing out add codes until we reach the course add deadline. Late start students will be given time to "catch up" with the rest of the course.
Students who start the course by logging in, turning in some work, and then “go silent” cannot expect to be dropped. I do send emails and post announcements as we approach drop deadlines. I am not obligated to drop students as we near the drop deadline. As a result, an F grade is possible for those who "go silent".

I look forward to working with you this semester.
This is a fast-paced 8 week course. Readings and assignments are to be completed on a weekly basis and a list of assignments and a course outline with due dates will be available the first day of class.
This course provides an opportunity to learn about personal wellness. There will be an emphasis on major health problems facing non-dominant/minority ethnic groups related to
acculturation, assimilation, and biological variations. Various health beliefs systems will be analyzed to promote prejudice reduction and understanding of cultural differences.
Catalog Description:
Presents the major health problems facing non-dominant/minority ethnic groups related to acculturation, assimilation and biological variations. Various health belief systems, folk remedies, health practices, and attitudes toward health will be analyzed to promote prejudice reduction and understanding of cultural differences. A variety of non-traditional and experiential teaching/learning strategies will be used to examine alternative approaches to healthy lifestyles.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify barriers that minorities face when access or receiving health care in the U.S. today.
- Compare and contrast nutrient analysis of various ethnic diets. (Optional: Demonstrate accurate analysis of ingredients on a food label and/or nutrition assessment, identifying saturated fats, trans-fats, salt and refined sugar.)
- Describe lifestyle changes you have made or plan to make as a result of taking this health class
- Identify lifestyle changes that will reduce your risk of major chronic or communicable diseases based on your family health history and/or current lifestyle choices
- Evaluate contemporary media, literature and institutions for discrimination and bias in multi-cultural health.
- Analyze examples of dominant and non-dominant group conflict.
- Explore various international health issues.
