THIS IS A FULLY ONLINE CLASS; NO MANDATORY MEETINGS!

This class has a Proctored Final Exam.  The exam is proctored through a service called Proctorio.

This is an online proctoring service so there is no need to leave your home.  A proctored exam is necessary to meet requirements for this class to transfer to CSUs.

What you need:

  1. Access to a webcam on your computer
  2. Chrome Browser

If you do not personally have access to a webcam on your computer, you might check the local libraries, the computer labs, a friend, etc.

The Proctorio service is free.  You do not need to schedule an exam date. You will be able to complete the exam anytime during the final exam window.  The exam window is several days in length and can be found on the course syllabus.

Check out the link below for more information on Proctorio

More information about the final exam will be available as we get closer to the exam date.   Students who do not complete the proctored final exam will automatically fail the course.

Instructor Contact Expectations:  I respond well within 24 hours to all email messages and Canvas forum postings. DO NOT rely on weekend help, even if most deadlines are set for Friday 6pm.  Each week runs from Monday through Friday, with a FRIDAY at NOON cut-off time.  Any questions posted after noon on Fridays may not get a response or not until the following working day (usually Monday of the following week), which may not help you. Plan your work accordingly.

Course Environment: This online course will be using a Web-based Learning Management System Canvas as the method to disseminate information. Canvas provides the framework for the course including PowerPoint presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a gradebook. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups.

Computer and Class Requirements:

  1. Access to a computer
  2. Reliable access to the Internet
  3. Familiarity with e-mail, including knowledge of receiving and sending attachments.
  4. Calculator

Class opens / Accessing Canvas: Prior to the classes start date, you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder that class will be starting and log in procedures for Canvas, the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content. You can access Canvas by logging into MyCuesta, then clicking on the Resources Tab, then clicking on Canvas in the Online Learning Channel, or by typing https://cuesta.instructure.com/ into your browser address bar. Online Learning

If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no lecture component, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. There are no face-to-face meetings.  This is a 4 unit college level course which translate to roughly 10 - 12 hours a week in lecture and homework.

IS an ONLINE CLASS FOR YOU?

  • First of all, go to the Online Readiness ResourcesLinks to an external site. and take the "self assessment " and review all the resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. (If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.)

Regular Effective Contact policy:

Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email and virtual office hours.

If the weekly discussion forum requires a response to a fellow classmate, the initial response needs to be made by end-of-day Thursday to receive full credit for that discussion assignment.  Points will be subtracted if the initial post is not made by end-of-day Thursday.
