KINE 202 - Principles of Coaching (CRN 33242)

Expect to complete 8 hours of work for this course, weekly. A forthcoming course calendar and syllabus through Canvas will detail your required weekly log-in's to view video presentations, participate in discussion forums, read PowerPoint presentations, take quizzes, and complete reading assignments.
All assignments for KINE 202 will be provided on the course start date. However, assignments are due on a week-by week-basis. You can work ahead, but you can't fall behind.

Regular Effective Contact Policy:
Regular and effective instructor contact will be met through weekly, instructor initiated, threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments, and virtual office hours.
Course Description:
KINE 202 will provide you with overviews of current theory and practice in coaching education, including sports pedagogy, physiology, psychology, administration, and risk management. Issues in sports performance and competition specific to child, youth, and collegiate coaching are addressed.
Students will be prepared, and expected to take the American Sports Education Program Coaching Principles Certification exam and the California Interscholastic Federation exam, at the completion of the course. Combined, the ASEP completed coaching exam, CIF completed exam and completion of the Principles of Coaching course will certify you to become a CIF coach.
Course Environment:
This online course will be using Canvas as the method to disseminate information. Canvas provides the framework for the course including PowerPoint presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums.
Necessary Technology:
To complete the KINE 202 Principles of Coaching course, you will need access to the following technology: PC computers preferred, Mac’s acceptable (all files will need to be exported to .word, or .pdf before being uploaded to Canvas when using Mac). Ability to use YouTube to create and upload video files to Canvas. I will be using Zoom to create my lectures. Please refrain from e-mail submissions in .pages, or Google docs (they can not be received by this instructor).
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze and create a practice/training plan for a sport.
- Apply academic methods and theories of coaching to team development, skill development, and athlete(s) psychological development.
- Understand and create your own personal coaching philosophy.
- Evaluate ergogenic and physiologic performance methods including nutritional strategies, performance enhancing methods, and drug use in sport.
