Welcome to Introduction to Plant Science

AGPS 242 CRN 74298

Welcome and Special Announcements

I am glad you are interested and ready to start the Introduction to Plant Science Class!  Class begins on August 17th

This is a blended class with online lectures and face to face labs. The size of the class has been reduced to allow for small lab groups to be conducted safely at the Plant Science Facility on the Paso Robles Campus.  Face to Face labs will be conducted on Tuesday or Thursday from 2 to 3:50 pm.  Students will need to attend lab on the same day each week.  Labs have a capacity of 12 students.  I will have a sign-up sheet as we get closer to the start of the semester so that you can pick your lab day.  The other lab for the week will be 2 hours per week of preparation for the in-person lab.

Instructor Information

My name is Dean Harrell.  Get ready to explore the world of plants.  There are so many amazing and crazy things that relate to the way plants function in our environment.  Learn about growing plants and cultivate a super garden!  This letter is to inform you of some of the important details prior to the start of this Fall 2020 class.

Instructor: Dean Harrell

Course Content

In this course, we will examine the role of higher plants in our society.  Plant structure, identification, and propagation will be studied for crop and ornamental plants.  The role of climate, soils, soil organic matter, microbial life, essential plant nutrients, fertilizers, and plant water relations will be considered as they affect plant growth and development.  These factors will be considered as they relate to sustainability, true economic cost, and resource management.  Harvest and postharvest handling will be examined for agricultural and ornamental crops.  You will become familiar with concepts and current thinking in each area.  You will have the opportunity to analyze, discuss and apply these ideas, as they relate to crop production and farm management situations.  Expect your curiosity and understanding to grow through hands on experience with plants, field trips and topics presented by guest speakers.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this class, the student should be able to:

  1. Examine the basic functions of plant processes.
  2. Analyze how crops grow while demonstrating knowledge of environmental and managerial conditions.
  3. Demonstrate proper management and care of crops, vegetables, and ornamental plants.
  4. Explain crop genetics and research development of crop or ornamental improvements.
