If you have a general or course-related question, the best place to ask it is on the Canvas FAQ pinned Discussion page. The best way to contact me with any personal questions is through Canvas email. I will generally respond to your emails within 24 hours on weekdays. During busy times of the semester, the response time may increase to 48 hours. On weekends (beginning Friday afternoon) and holidays, I cannot guarantee an expeditious response.
Course Environment
This online course will be using a Web-based Learning Management System Canvas as the primary method to disseminate information. Canvas provides the framework for the course including PowerPoint presentations, links to McGraw-Hill Connect tools, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups.
Class opens / Accessing Canvas
We will have our first class meeting on Zoom at 9am or 4pm (depending on your course section) on Wednesday of opening week. The Zoom link and the PW will be available on Canvas.

Prior to the Monday classes start, if you are enrolled, you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder that class will be starting, how to access our first day Zoom meeting, and the log in procedures for Canvas (the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content). You can access Canvas by logging into MyCuesta, then clicking on the Resources Tab, then clicking on Canvas in the Online Learning Channel, or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar. Do not bookmark / favorite the Canvas site after your login, or you will get an error message next time you try to log in. You must access the Canvas log in directly.

Online Learning
If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself. Online classes are not inherently easier, although they may be much more convenient for many students. You should expect to spend at least as much time, if not more on this course as you would on a course that meets face to face. Since there is no face-to-face teaching, much of this time will be self-directed and there will be a substantial amount of reading, viewing, studying, and writing required. This online course uses Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) will be submitted online. Lectures will be available asynchronously, to view when and how often you would like.
You are required to visit the online Anatomy Lab as you prepare for your laboratory exams.
Instructors will be available in the ConferZoom “Lab” room. You should plan to spend 6 hours per week (minimum) studying for your laboratory exams. You are required to both visit and interact in the online Anatomy Zoom lab twice weekly in order to participate in the lab exams for full credit.
You may earn no more than two laboratory visits per day. You may earn only one visit within each half hour spent in the lab. For a lab visit to be counted, you must attend for a minimum of 15 min. For example, if you attend for 30 minutes, it will count as one visit. If you attend for 45 minutes or more, on the same day, it will count as two visits. Plan your visits accordingly.
If you do not visit the online lab at least twice per week, your lab exam score drops by 5 points for every missed visit. For example, if you have one week to prepare for a lab exam, you must attend lab twice. If you only attend lab once, you will lose 5 points on your exam score. If it takes 2 weeks to prepare for your lab exam and you attend lab only once, you will lose 15 points from your lab exam score. In this case, you should have visited the online lab four times within that two week period. When you visit the online lab, make sure to type “Hi” in the chat, and “Bye,” to note when you enter and when you leave the lab. This will ensure that your attendance is counted.

Online attendance and exam assessment are mandatory for continued enrollment in the course.
You are required to visit with Dr. Lobo for the scheduled ConferZoom meetings found in the course schedule. They will take place during the regularly scheduled Wednesday lecture times (9am or 4pm). For your attendance to count, you must show your first and last name (as they appear on your Cuesta records) as your Zoom username. Each time you do not attend these mandatory Zoom meetings, you will lose 10 points. If you have an emergency that prevents your attendance, communicate as soon as you are able and maintain any documentation.
If you do not log into Canvas and do coursework for longer than a one week period of time without communicating with your lead instructor, you may be dropped from the course. If you miss more than one lab exam or miss one lecture exam, you may be dropped from the course. Lecture and laboratory exams will take place during scheduled class time only and will allow one attempt. It is your responsibility to ensure that both your computer and your internet are operating properly to allow images to load at a reasonable pace during your limited-time testing. Make sure to prepare this before beginning your exams.

- First, go to the Cuesta College Canvas Tutorial (self paced), there are many resources that were designed to help you understand the basis for an online class and the skills necessary for success. If the tutorials do NOT describe you, then taking this class online is NOT for you and I strongly suggest that you drop the online class and enroll in a traditional classroom section.

Course Description
Human Anatomy (BIO 205) introduces the structure and function of the human body. The class introduces and integrates cytology, histology, embryology and pathology throughout each organ system. Includes gross and microscopic anatomy of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, sensory, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive organ systems. Lab includes study of preserved specimens, models and charts.

College & Course Policies
Academic Honesty Policy: Working with other students in study groups is strongly encouraged. Examinations and quizzes however, are to be completed individually via the Canvas LMS. Any instance of academic dishonesty, not limited to, and including, plagiarism (using the same exact words as another student or writer) will result in a zero score and a Student Incident report will be filed. In addition to my course policy, please note all students attending San Luis Obispo County Community College District at any district site and when representing Cuesta College in any off-campus activity, assume an obligation to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner compatible with the Student Code of conduct. Add / Drop Policy: Students who do not participate online or communicate with the instructor for 2 weeks or more, will be dropped from the class. In addition to my policy, please review the Cuesta policy for drops:
Waitlist Policy: Students on the waitlist will be added in the order they appear on the waitlist on the first day of class. Keep a close eye on your Cuesta email and respond promptly if you are hoping to add. If space is available on the first day of class, add codes will be provided to those hoping to add. Personal note
Cuesta College, like colleges and Universities all over the world, is facing some unprecedented changes to how we operate. Whether taught online or in person, BIO205 Human Anatomy is a fascinating and challenging course that will give you tremendous insight into the human body. Taking a class during a pandemic can pose some challenges that we may not have anticipated. Whatever the case, I am here for each of my students and want to see you succeed. One key to success is communicating with me early about any challenges you are facing. Another key to success is to engage with your classmates. So be friendly and responsive with each other, even if it feels unnatural online or you feel shy. A third key, is to plan your study calendar and be self-disciplined. I look forward to meeting you!
