Welcome from instructor:

Hello Personal Training Certification Preparation students!  I have boundless enthusiasm and expertise for this class!  This class is challenging as there is a lot of material to cover. The challenge is worth it but you need to mind-set staying on top of your work.  What an amazing opportunity we all have in this class to learn and grow and expand ourselves.  The fitness industry is continuing to explode and personal trainers are in demand.  Further, many student enroll in KINE 224 because they are interested in the medical or peri-medical fields like physical therapy, chiropractic medicine, and more.

Instructor Contact Expectations:  I am usually able to return emails M-Th within a 24 hour window during the normal semester time span. Emails that arrive M-Th before 1:15 will likely be answered the same day.  For email arriving  F-Sat-Sun, I should be able to respond within a 48 hour window.  There have been moments when an email is delayed or waylaid arriving to my inbox.  Feel free to “poke” me again if you have not heard back in the time frames I listed.

Course Description 

Presents the principles of fitness training and its application to personal training for the health and fitness professional.  Upon completion of this course, the student will be prepared to take the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer certification exam. Transfer: CSU 

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  • Formulate a comprehensive, integrated training program by synthesizing the scientific based model and programming presented by the American College of Sports Medicine. 
  • Identify and differentiate between normal and special populations and apply exercise, nutrition, and psychological principles to assist clients in attaining health goals. 
  • Demonstrate proper technique of fitness assessments and exercises and be able to physically and orally explain each to clients. 
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and capabilities to pass the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam. 
  • Present current research-based and theoretical information related to the scope and practice and Job Task Analysis (JTA) recommendations established by the American College of Sports Medicine for their ACSM Certified Personal Trainer credential. 

Course Environment: 

There is a sample syllabus at very bottom of this page.  It includes more details on class.  Class attendance is critical and we cover material at a rapid pace.  We work like a team as we practice skills and techniques on each other including how to instruct exercises. This in person class will also use a Web-based Learning Management System Canvas. Canvas provides the framework for the course including PowerPoint presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, quizzes, homework, and a grade book.  If all the canvas explanations sound confusing, instructor can help you the first week of classes!

Please be prepared to spend 9 - 12 hours per week on coursework for this class.  (Each Cuesta unit expects students to spend 3-4 hours, including class time.  This is a 3 unit class)

Class opens / Accessing Canvas: 

You can access Canvas by logging into MyCuesta, then clicking on the Resources Tab, then clicking on Canvas in the Online Learning Channel, or by typing the Canvas address (https://cuesta.instructure.com/) into your browser address bar. Do not bookmark / favorite the canvas site after your login, or you will get an error message next time you try to log in. You must access the canvas log in directly.

  • ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (9th Edition) or most current edition  (If you are certain you will certify w ACSM, you need this.  If you are uncertain, you can wait, as everything in this guideline is also in book)

Add / Drop Policy:  If there is room in the class, I will add students up to the add deadline (Jan 31, 2021.) Students who do not log in the first week or who miss the first synchronous class on Jan 19 may be dropped.  Student who do not log in for longer than 10 days may be dropped.  Here is Cuesta policy for adds and drops:
