Assignments

Textbook – Halderman, James D., Automotive Engines: Theory and Servicing, Ninth Edition, Pearson Education Inc., 2018.

ISBN# 0-13-465400-5

Reading assignments weekly.  (CA. Ed. Code section 55002, Cuesta Board Policy)  The date on the calendar is the date the reading assignment and homework is due.  Read assignment before coming to class.  Reading, comprehending, and communication is an essential part of almost all current careers.  Students MUST be able to access, analyze, and interpret a variety of service information from various mediums.  Very few automotive technicians are successful unless they are able and willing to read and communicate at high levels.

Written assignments (homework), from textbook and lecture, averaging once per week.  Late homework may be turned in for ½ credit.

Lab assignments – Demonstrate skills, verified by instructor.  Students will complete the appropriate lab skills as outlined in NATEF Tasks for A-1, Engine Repair.

3 exams, including the final, typically multiple choice.

Quizzes and special assignments as needed.

Grading – Grades will be based on the following scale from possible points earned:

90-100%               A

80-89%                 B

70-79%                 C

60-69%                 D

Below 60%          F

Your grade will be based on the following weight:

Exams   35%

Labs       35%

Homework and quizzes 15%

Professionalism 15%

Exams - There will be 2 mid-term exams (100 points each) and one final exam (200 points) (see calendar for dates).  Exams will primarily focus on material covered since the last exam. The final exam will be comprehensive.  If you have to miss an exam, you must contact the instructor prior to missing the exam in order to receive any consideration.  No make up exams will be given unless there is prior authorization.  The student is required to bring a SCANTRON (882-E) and a #2 pencil to each exam.

Quizzes will be on an as needed basis, will be unannounced, will be given at the beginning of class, and cannot be made up.  Unless otherwise noted, all tests and quizzes will be open note.  (They must be hand written, however.  A good rule of thumb is; if it has printer ink or toner on it, then it is dis-allowed). You are encouraged to take notes from the textbook and from the lectures.

Lab sheets will be provided to the student on or before the day the lab is assigned, and they will also be available on the “files” menu on Canvas.  It will be the student’s responsibility to complete the lab during lab time and to submit it in a timely manner; preferably during the same class meeting.  If the student completes a portion of the lab, and then loses the lab sheet, then the lab must be completed again.

Homework is assigned weekly and is due at the beginning of class on the date assigned on the calendar.  If the student arrives late to class, (and after homework has been called for), the homework is considered late and will receive half credit. All homework must be turned in on a Scantron Quizzstrip (form 815-E, 15 question). The instructor will post on line, all homework questions at least one week prior to homework being due

Lab clean up cards will be given out to students before going to the shop for lab.  The student MUST complete their clean-up assignment, have the instructor inspect and sign the card, and turn it in.  The clean up score will be added to the lab score. If you are late to class, leave lab early, or fail to turn in your clean up card, you will not receive a clean up score for that day.

Professionalism - industry demands certain traits and behaviors from their employees, including: punctuality, attendance, attitude, ability to get along with others, initiative, cleanliness, care of facilities and equipment, and the ability to work within industry expectations.  The professionalism grade will be assigned by the instructor based on the students’ performance in the classroom and shop environments.  Attendance and punctuality is a significant component of this grade.

Be on time to class.  Important announcements, such as changes to the calendar or lab activities, typically occur during the first 10 minutes of class.

Safety

No student will be allowed to work in the shop until they have received appropriate and current safety instruction and have passed the SP2 Safety program (https://sp2.org/site/ ). Students must complete both the Mechanical Safety and Mechanical Pollution Prevention Modules. Students will be dropped from the class if they do not complete this training by Monday February 3, 2020.

Students MUST wear eye protection (provided by the student) and shop appropriate clothing.  This rule is non-negotiable by both the College and by NATEF.  Students who do not abide by this policy will be removed from lab and may have their lab grade penalized.  Routine and open violation of this policy will cause the student’s removal from the class.  Students who willfully violate policy, or who consistently work in a negligent manner, may be removed from class, at the instructor’s discretion.

Special Needs

If you have a disability, or any other special need that may affect your ability to work in the shop or in class, bring it to my attention as soon as possible so that we can make appropriate accommodations.

Student Conduct

Students are expected to behave in a professional and responsible manner and should adhere to the Cuesta College Academic Honesty and Student Code of Conduct policy.  Here is a summary of the policy:

You will exhibit honesty with regard to your own work.  You will not copy other peoples’ work and will not cheat on exams.  You may be dropped from the class or receive a failing grade for violating the academic honesty policy.

Students are expected to conduct themselves professionally and properly while in class and on campus.  An instructor may remove a student from class for a time for unacceptable conduct.  An instructor may also drop a student from class who is neglecting the work of the course.

For a complete description of this and other policies, go to:

http://www.cuesta.edu/aboutcc/planning/vpss/student_judicial_process.html

Lab

  • Lockers are available for students in the lab; students should provide their own lock. Locks will be cut off at the end of each semester and the contents discarded.
  • Students wanting to perform work other than the required tasks must have prior approval from the instructor-NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • It is not permissible for students to work in the shop without an instructor present.
  • Students are responsible for returning all tools to their proper places (i.e. tool room and tool cabinets) and cleaning their work area.
  • Students will be assigned a lab clean-up area at the beginning of class by being assigned a “clean-up card”, that will be worth lab points daily. The student must clean this area BEFORE leaving for the day and have the instructor sign off that it is completed satisfactorily.  Students who arrive late to class, and do not receive a clean-up card, will not receive points for the day. All clean up cards are due at the top of the hour of the conclusion of the lab time. The instructor has the discretion to disallow points if clean up is not completed on time. If you consistently neglect your clean up responsibilities, the instructor may take punitive actions. If you forget to turn in the card that day, you will not receive points for the day.
  • Every student must perform the “tool room monitor” function at least once per semester.
  • Any broken or inoperable tool should be reported to the instructor.
  • Students are not allowed to park in the auto compound at any time – This includes immediately before or after scheduled class times – you will be at risk of being ticketed by campus police. Parking in the lab area is only permitted for one of the following conditions: 1) you will be working on your vehicle during the appropriate LAB time (not lecture time) and has a current campus parking permit, 2) if the vehicle must be left for more than one day, a project vehicle pass must displayed in the front window. See instructor for pass.  All project vehicles, completed or not, must be removed from campus no later than the Saturday before final exams for that semester.
  • Cuesta College is not liable for any vehicle left on campus property. All project vehicles, completed or not, must be removed from campus no later than the Saturday before final exams.
  • All hazardous waste substances that are produced during the normal operations of a class must be disposed of in a proper manner. If you are unsure of the procedure, see instructor immediately. Under no circumstances are hazardous waste products, (this includes, but is not limited to petroleum products, tires, coolant acids, etc) produced outside of Cuesta College, to be brought to nor left on campus. Serious criminal penalties could be imposed.

Attendance / Drops

If you decide to drop this class, please have the courtesy to notify the instructor and complete the proper paperwork with the records office.  If you do not officially drop, school policy requires a grade of “F” for the semester.  The instructor may also drop a student for poor attendance and/or non-performance of required work.  If you miss 3 consecutive class meetings (without contacting the instructor), or 6 meetings overall, he will consider you no longer interested in attending class and will drop you from the roster.  However, if you have extenuating circumstances that require an extended absence, please notify the instructor, preferably by phone.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students in this class can expect to accomplish a great number of tasks during this semester. Essentially all of the hands-on tasks come from the ASE Education Foundation task list for Engines (Section A-1). This list can be found in several places; on the ASE Education Foundation web site (https://www.aseeducationfoundation.org/), beginning on page 535, sections A & D of the textbook, and on the “Canvas” web site.
