Art 271: Sculpture I - CRN 32778 - Spring 2023

Sculpture I is an introductory course that focuses on contemporary practices in sculpture.  Projects include representational and abstract imagery, such as human or animal figures, as well as non-representational projects. A variety of materials and techniques allow every student to pursue creative expression that suits their interest, temperament, and abilities. Students with no art experience work alongside art students and artists with all levels being equally successful and engaged. 

  • Some students opt to dive into welding and wood construction while others lean toward less tool intensive materials such as plaster, paper mache, and found object assemblage. 
  • Some students work extremely realistically and others explore more expressive ways of working. 
  • Assignments are designed with clear technical instructions, demos and lectures, and small exercises that augment the larger assignments. 
  • It is possible for all students to earn an A in this course if they put in the required time and complete all assignments and projects.  Pass/no pass is also an option for this course: Pass/no pass Cuesta College
  • We may occasionally touch on controversial topics as we view student and professional artwork. The classroom is a safe place that welcomes diverse voices and bodies and makes room for open and respectful communication.

 

Important Course Information 

  • Meets for 18-weeks (1/17-5/16) 
  • Two in-person class meetings per week: Tuesday and Thursday 1:30-4:20 (Room 7107)
  • About 1-4 hours of homework per week 
    • Researching artists and assignment ideas
    • Small preparatory exercises
    • Finishing projects started in class
  • Open lab time in the classroom is available for students who have been absent or want to put in additional hours on projects.
  • Minimal and optional online component for viewing course documents, reading course announcements, and the option of posting images. You will gain full access to online viewing on the first day of the semester, TuesdayJanuary 17.  Access to Canvas is found on your myCuesta page. 

Mandatory Final Exam: Tuesday 5/16 12:00-2:00pm

 

Art 271: Student Learning Outcomes 

Upon completion of Art 271, the student will be able to:

  1. Creatively and safely use various three-dimensional media and their accompanying tools and techniques.
  2. Produce sculptural works that demonstrate understanding of representational, abstract, non-objective, or conceptual imagery and apply the formal principles of design and visual elements.
  3. Examine and describe historical and contemporary developments, trends, materials, and approaches in sculpture.
  4. Assess and critique sculptural works in group, individual, and written contexts using relevant critique formats, concepts and terminology.

 

Textbook and Materials list for this Course

There is no required text for this course, partly to make the course more affordable.  You will learn about 3-D artists and techniques through lectures, simple research (looking for examples of Sculpture/3-Design), discussions, and assignments.

Materials such as clay, plaster, metal, etc. will be provided for most assignments. You will need to supply some inexpensive materials, which may include items such as:

  • A glue gun and glue sticks 
  • Cardboard 
  • Acrylic paint and brushes (Other finishes may be considered for some projects. Paints and brushes are available in the classroom.)
  • Scissors and other tools to work with cardboard and paper
  • Found or inexpensive materials: a few assignments require individual research and selection and gathering of no-cost or low-cost materials. 

 

Canvas Information

This course uses Canvas (a Web-based Learning Management System) as the method to disseminate information including assignment handouts, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. You can communicate using Canvas email. The online component is minimal and other options are possible, if requested.

Waitlist/Add/Drop Policies

Every student can excel in this course with regular attendance and active participation. If an emergency or illness prevents you from coming to class for two or more consecutive class sessions, please email me so I can let you know what you missed and how you can make up the work. A student may be dropped after three absences, however, it is the responsibility of the student to officially withdraw if he or she stops attending class.

  • Deadline to drop without a “W” 1/29/23. 
  • Last day to drop with a W is 4/16/23.
