Welcome to Music 201 Fundamentals of Music  *I am not teaching this course at the moment*

(DE early start, 9 week session)

This course is CRN _______ starting______ ends ________. It is completed entirely online including but not limited to your coursework with assignments, discussions, quizzes, and exams.  There are no class face to face meetings however there may be comments shared via conferences and audio / video recordings. This online course will require as much time as a traditional course, yet allowing flexibility for you to complete the work you need during times convenient to your schedule. Please be aware of calendar deadlines and due dates and pace yourself throughout the semester. By being a well organized, independent student who has access to Canvas has the ability to use good time management skills to complete this class successfully.

When the semester begins, I am available to answer questions online during office hours as well as via email. Emails will be answered within 24 hours Monday - Friday, but not on the weekends. • I generally log off around 5pm every day and do not respond to emails on the weekends, *however with this course being a 9 week course with deadlines throughout the course calendar, I will do my best to respond within 24 hours to your emails.

 

SLOs student learning outcomes for Mus 201

1. Write and recognize in staff notation the elementary components of diatonic tonal music, including pitch and rhythm.
2. Construct major and minor scales and key signatures; intervals up to the octave; and commonly used diatonic triads and seventh chords.
3. Identify simple and compound meters; intervals up to the octave; major and minor key signatures; and commonly used diatonic triads and seventh chords.
4. Play triads and scales on a keyboard and sing basic solfege syllables on the correct pitches.
5. Connect musical elements with examples of great works of music and aesthetic expression.
6. Place music making, study and notation in the context of our culture.
7. Create music and express it using correct notation, key signatures, time signatures and rhythms.

• Materials necessary for the class: 
• MATERIALS: All required lesson notes, course contents, practice exercises, assignments, quizzes and exams will be accessed through Canvas.
• It will likely be necessary to print assignments and then submit as a photo upload. Photographing capabilities are required. This could be done via a device like a digital phone or other digital camera or digital scanner.
• Recording capabilities required. Audio assignments will be assigned. Students will be required to upload a recording of activities related to music theory such as sight singing and using singing and clapping various rhythmic patterns.
• Taking notes on both a hard copy notebook and/or online tools such as Diigo or Evernote is helpful but not required.
• Google slides (if you have a google email, then you have access to google slides which is used in our course)
• Padlet (you have to create an account to access this site which we will use throughout the course)
• Technology tools outside the LMS(learning management system – Canvas):

• Optional: Manuscript paper, lined staff paper (you can find this online and print pages to use, in addition there is lined staff paper notebooks for sale at the Cuesta College bookstore)

• Authentication policy: Authenticating student identity will be conducted through the use of the Learning Management System, Canvas. Canvas requires each student to log into the program using a secure login and password to access.
• Regular Effective Contact policy: Regular and Effective Instructor Contact will be met through weekly instructor initiated threaded discussion forums; weekly announcements to students; timely and effective feedback on student assignments; email, individuals; and office hours (see above for instructor contact info)

Student Expectations

• Online classes are available and make your education experience more convenient. However, this is not a self pace, learn on your own class. This is a 3-unit college level course which is about 4-5 hours a week in lecture and homework. I have structured weeks with material for you to read, watch,interact with and complete written and 'recorded' assignments. I ask my students to find time in their busy schedules to log into the classroom four out of seven days a week to discuss topics related to the material being learned. This helps to answer questions, clear up confusion, and we have a chance to learn from other students experiences. The days in which you log on are up to the students and can be weekdays or weekends whichever works best for your situation.
• *Because this is a condensed course, deadlines throughout each week occur almost every 2nd to 3rd day. Multiple assignments (including readings, written home work to submit and discussion posts) for this course *tend to be Thursdays/ Sundays / Tuesdays by 11:59pm.
• Check your email for weekly announcements…be sure you have an email connected to the LMS – Canvas system (Cuesta) so that you receive correspondence successfully. You can set up in canvas settings how frequently you can receive email updates.
• You should also print out a copy of this syllabus and keep it handy for reference.
• The course will cover 8 chapters, including almost daily quizzes to be completed within the condensed semester. Each unit will appear in the Modules section of the course. To get started each week, closely review the Overview page, which lists the learning objectives and required assignments for the unit. Taking notes on both a hard copy notebook and/or online tools such as Diigo or Evernote is highly suggested. 

 

Netiquette and Online Course Participation*

• Use respectful and appropriate language in your forum discussions. 
• Please do not use texting language, lol. 
• Emoticons are acceptable ways to show emotion.
• Avoid CAPS as they come across like YOU'RE SCREAMING.
• You are expected to read all forum posts.
• You are to respond to the appropriate number of posts for each forum.
• All messages are public, so be careful and courteous when you post.
• Make your posts thorough and your replies as well. 
• Complete sentences and thoughts are mandatory for forum posts. 
• Use a person's name when you reply to their post.
• Use mycuesta.edu email for private communication.

Grading Policy and Assignment Expectations

At the final week of the course there is a Final Exam.

Student is responsible for meeting deadlines and due dates by staying organized and checking LMS – Canvas for this course on a regular basis.

Within each chapter there are assignments to complete each time. Remember to organize your time wisely, setting aside a daily time to study and prepare for this course.
