¡Bienvenidos a SPAN 204! This is a fully online course with no mandatory meetings. The online components will be taught through 2 websites, Canvas and Supersite. The following information will help get you started in the course.

Time Expectations

This is a 5-unit class so you should expect to spend about 10 hours per week studying and completing the assignments. There are no mandatory meetings, and assignments will be due every Monday.

Scheduling

You will need to schedule two assignments during the course:

  1. Weekly video partner chats with another student in the class. This is sometime challenging with differing schedules, but it is necessary practice. It will be your responsibility to set these up, and please be respectful of your partner's time.
  2. One check in with me. This is a great chance for us to meet one-on-one to practice and check-in. The check-ins usually happen in the beginning or middle of the semester.

Course Description

Presents an expansion of SPAN 203 focusing on 4 skills: listening, conversation, reading and presentational writing. Drawing from authentic materials, SPAN 204 is an intermediate course that provides a comprehensive grammar review, extensive oral practice and an introduction to literary concepts. Competency reflects the students' emerging ability to perform both orally and in written form with complex situations. Online multimedia practice is required and includes audio and video and extensive online resources. Prerequisite: SPAN 203 with a minimum grade of C or better Transfer: CSU; UC.

Class Structure

Each chapter starts with presentations and tutorials, followed by guided practice activities, such as discussions and homework, which lead to communicative activities and video chats. While there are no required meetings, you will need to schedule time with a partner each week to record a video chat on a relevant topic to the section.

Required Text Book/Materials

  1. You need the textbook (Imagina: Espanol sin barreras, 5th edition) and Supersite Plus access for the online homework. It is cheapest at the Vista Website and you have 3 options and all are acceptable:
    • Digital book + online access for 5 months (Cheapest option; only works for this semester)
    • Digital book + online access for 12 months (Recommended if you plan to take SPAN 204 in the spring. The code will work for both classes, so cheapest option for 2 classes) 
    • Digital book + online access for 18 months (Recommended if you plan to take SPAN 204 in the spring. The code will work for both classes, so cheapest option for 2 classes)
    • Physical book + online access for 5/12/18 months (This costs a lot more, but it is the best option if you like to have a physical copy of the book)
  1. A good bilingual Spanish/English dictionary (Free dictionary www.wordreference.comLinks to an external site.)

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate listening comprehension of level-appropriate, topic-based materials in Spanish.
  2. Demonstrate reading comprehension of level-appropriate, topic-based texts in Spanish.
  3. Convey verbally the meaning of topic-centered, level-appropriate materials in Spanish.
  4. Write complex sentences and extended paragraphs in Spanish referencing a variety of social and cultural situations presented in this level of the Spanish program.
  5. Describe, discuss, contrast and compare various basic physical and sociological manifestations of Spanish–speaking cultures.
