WELCOME!

I look forward to working with you this semester. During this 9-week session we have an opportunity to learn about personal wellness. There is an emphasis on personal health across the lifespan by assessing personal wellness patterns.  I try to present information through a multi-dimensional (ex. cultural, aging, disability, gender lens) perspective. Health and wellness involves a range of diverse individual concerns across the population. The primary objective is to focus on prevention of chronic and communicable conditions which include mental health and addiction. Learning outcomes involve improved ability to make informed decisions and a greater understanding about diverse health risk factors. This course also is designed to provide an introduction to health careers.

This is a fast paced, short course with a Hybrid format. We meet Mondays 6:00-8:50 PM (synchronous mandatory meeting time) plus additional online material virtually via Canvas; an asynchronous (on your own time) distance learning platform. Online weekly work includes reading/listening to material, quizzes plus various assignments including researching information online, watching videos, Q&A worksheets and exam preparation via study guide.  Please attend in person on October 16th in room 1100 to receive hardcopy materials and view demonstration of online activities that night.

Please email me if you are unable to come to class due to issues regarding poor health etc. Starting Oct 23st, if the technology is working, we have an option to open the classroom to a live zoom meeting using OWL. Most students learn much more in person on Mondays. However, if you are sick, and/or if there are travel challenges, a synchronous zoom option is helpful. Please contact with questions regarding this format.

There are weekly deadlines to complete course material. Generally, Monday assignments are due by Friday, and online segments are due the following Monday. There is an exception during Thanksgiving week. There will be class on Monday 11/20.

Please contact me if you are having difficulty meeting deadlines. I can make exceptions for many things. Some specific items such as exams and group work may not be as flexible. The course ends on Friday 12/15 and I cannot except work after that date.

HEED 202 Catalog Description:

Presents the major health topics and provides an introduction to health careers, emphasizing the prevention of non-communicable conditions, promotion of health and fitness throughout the lifespan, and the application of current research in health to affect behavior and lifestyle changes. Health issues will be discussed from a multi-dimensional perspective using relevant examples from a variety of diverse populations, including predominant ethnic minority groups.

Textbook

You do not need to buy a textbook for this course.

Online instruction includes reading content from canvas pages, clicking links that take you to various websites for information, pre-recorded videos, media clips and quizzes. Every week includes a multiple choice online quiz. There are four timed essay exams online. I discuss and review essay questions with you, in class, on the Monday prior to the exam.

Homework involves researching information online, examining personal diet and exercise patterns and turning in worksheet assignments. A group project starts mid-November. This project spans Thanksgiving week. You can meet with your group classmates in person on the 21st and 28th and/or work with them virtually.  The project is due Dec 1st with in-class discussion on December 4th.

Class location:

Room 1100 is located near the swim pool. The women's locker room is at one end of the building and 1300 Kinesiology building is adjacent on the other side. The classroom is not far from campus flagpole and weight room. Gil Stork gym is located on the opposite side of the pool.

Office Hours:

Mondays 5:30-6PM + TBD via email or zoom meetings if needed.

My office is in room 1321 located in the Kinesiology and Athletics building 1300.

I have preset office hours MW afternoons on the SLO campus from 12:30-1:30PM and 5:45-6PM before our face to face class. We can meet online using a Zoom chatroom.  I generally check emails most days of the week. I am offline M-Th mornings due to other classes. Please email with questions or to set-up a meeting time outside of the preset course hours. It is best to set meeting times up at least a day in advance.

Online learning management system

Cuesta’s Course learning management system is CANVAS. There is a self-paced tutorial that students may access NOW to get introduced to the learning environment. It walks students through a typical course layout and the common Canvas tools. The tutorial also provides resources on how to download applications, working with browsers, and more.

https://www.cuesta.edu/academics/distance/survey.htmlLinks to an external site.

During the first meeting I will review some basic functions in Canvas. It is encouraged to review the link above as an introduction. You can access CANVAS quickly by

  • going to cuesta.eduLinks to an external site.
  • On the top of the page click on Canvas (green button)
  • Log in with our cuesta college username and password
  • Click on your class page to get started. (HEED 203)

The Canvas app can be downloaded onto a phone. Canvas provides the framework for the course including links to documents, videos and presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups. Some aspects of Canvas work better on a computer so it is helpful to have something available especially during group projects which may involve shared documents.

Accessing Canvas: Prior to October 16th, 2021  you will receive an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address providing you with a reminder about our first class meeting, and with log in procedures for Canvas, the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content.

If you are having difficulty logging into Canvas and need assistance please email me or technical support at this email address: support@my.cuesta.edu. If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself and ask for help.

This is not a self-paced course. An online/hybrid class requires just as much time or more than a traditional face to face course. Much of your time is self-managed and with a substantial amount of reading/listening, research, studying and writing required.  Requirements include the ability to access information online. Please save documents in adobe acrobat (pdf), attach and submit work online within Canvas. I am unable to open and grade heic, pages, notes and other apple or iphone specific documents within Canvas.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate accurate analysis of the nutrients, ingredients and calories from fats, proteins and carbohydrates on a food label.
  2. Apply media literacy tools to evaluate the credibility and reliability of health literature.
