Content can be saved, downloaded in pdf format and printed, or viewed online. There are numerous illustrations relating to anatomy and other course content. Instructor's Add and drop policies

I am obligated to follow Cuesta's add/drop policies. There is a census deadline the first week to verify participation of enrolled students. Those who do not log into the course by midnight on the first Friday of class may be dropped. I generally send out multiple emails the first week of class. If there is no login or response by the first weekend of class, a student may be dropped. This is especially true if the course is full with a wait list.

Waitlisted students receive notification from mycuesta if a slot becomes available BEFORE the first day of class.

AFTER the first day of class, waitlisted students can expect an email from me  regarding their status. Please respond when I reach out so that I know if you are still interested in the course.  Waitlisted students who are silent and do not respond, don't get an add code after the course has started.

Therefore, if you want to add the course please email me. I will give out an add code if a slot becomes available. I appreciate persistence and patience, because slots usually become available in full classes by the second week of class. I will continue handing out add codes until we reach the course add deadline. Late start students will be given time to "catch up" with the rest of the course.

Students who start the course by logging in, turning in some work, and then “go silent” cannot expect to be dropped. I do send emails and post announcements as we approach drop deadlines. I am not obligated to drop students as we near the drop deadline. As a result, an F grade is possible for those who "go silent".

WELCOME!

In this course there is an opportunity to learn about personal wellness. The focus is on health with a special relevance to women. Everyone is welcome in this course. There is an emphasis on body image, access to care, prevention of chronic diseases, self-empowerment strategies, pregnancy and international health issues. We all will have opportunity to examine lifestyle choices to promote wellness and prevent disease.

WEB Distance Learning has no scheduled meetings and is asynchronous.  Asynchronous means you can work through course assignments at any time during the week, and there are weekly due dates. I am available via email and/or we can meet using zoom and I can explain how to do something or answer questions. A zoom code is provided in the syllabus and we can arrange (via email) to meet. Please pay attention to start dates and drop deadlines for short session courses.

Catalog Course Description:

Presents major health issues of special significance to women cross culturally. Emphasis will be placed on current trends in the prevention of chronic diseases and health disorders, the promotion of a positive body image, and self-empowerment. Identification of significant cultural obstacles of access for women’s health care by non-dominant groups are presented. In addition, traditional, as well as, experiential and cooperative teaching/learning strategies will be used to explore the application of lifestyle changes to individual health beliefs and practices.

Accessing Cuesta's learning management system:

Cuesta’s Course learning management system is CANVAS. There is a self-paced tutorial that students may access NOW to get introduced to the learning environment.

https://www.cuesta.edu/academics/distance/survey.htmlLinks to an external site.

For those participating in the WEB course, during the first week of class there are a couple of opportunities to demonstrate and acknowledge ability to use canvas. A link is provided for further instructions on how to use this platform if needed. You can access CANVAS quickly by

  • going to cuesta.eduLinks to an external site.
  • On the top of the page click on Canvas (green button)
  • Log in with our cuesta college username and password
  • Click on your class page to get started. (HEED 203)

The Canvas app can be downloaded onto a phone. Canvas provides the framework for the course including links to documents, videos and presentations, student data files, the tools to receive and send course materials, and a grade book. Using the communication tools, you can communicate using e-mail, and you can share materials and ideas with other course participants via the discussion forums and groups. Some aspects of Canvas work better on a computer so it is helpful to have one available especially during group projects.

Accessing Canvas:

Prior to the course start date you will get an email to your my.Cuesta.edu address with a reminder that class will be starting. I include instructions for log in procedures to Canvas, which is the learning management system (LMS) used to deliver course content.

If you are having difficulty logging into Canvas and need assistance please email me or technical support at this email address: support@my.cuesta.edu. If you have never taken an online class or this is your first experience with Canvas, please be patient with yourself and ask for help.

Web/online classes have readings and assignments due on a weekly basis. The modules are set up by week. It is very important to stay current with course work.

Distance learning is not easier as it requires a lot of self discipline and self-motivation. It can be more convenient to work online, but it can be tough to set up a personal schedule. Many students prefer to attend in person for a more interactive experience. Please recognize that an online class may require more time than a traditional face to face course. Although there are some pre-recorded lecture components, much of your time will be self-directed and includes substantial amounts of reading, viewing, studying and writing. On Canvas I generally have links to cited information. There is access to a lot of information not available in a face to face class. This can take time to read through and comprehend. Because this course is completely online using Canvas; all coursework (discussions, assignments, quizzes) is submitted online. You should be able to read and save documents in adobe acrobat (pdf), attach and submit work online within Canvas. I can access jpg, prn screen shots as well as Microsoft word and excel files.

Please note; I cannot open files that are .pages  .heic  .notes and other non PC formats. It is best to save and submit work in pdf format especially if using cell phone and/or apple devices.

DSPS Statement:

This course design is with an accessible Learning Management System. Course materials are prepared with ADA compliance in mind. Any student who feels they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, such as extended time on exams, should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Please contact Disabled Student Services & Programs at Building 3300 (546-3148) on SLO Campus or on North Campus (591-6215) to coordinate reasonable accommodations for documented disabilities. Doing so as soon as possible will help ensure accommodations in a timely manner.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement

It is my intent to be inclusive towards students from all diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I believe that anyone can be well-served by taking a personal health course. It is my intent that students' learning needs be addressed both in and out of class, and that the diversity of culture students bring here be viewed as a resource, strength and benefit. It is my intent to present materials and activities that are respectful of diversity: gender identity, sexuality, disability, age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, nationality, religion, and culture. Your positive suggestions are encouraged and appreciated. Please let me know ways to improve the effectiveness of the course for you personally, or for other students or student groups.

Thank you for reading my introduction and I look forward to working with you. If you have any questions regarding this course, please feel free to contact me at the email listed above. I will do my best to answer your questions or refer you to someone that can answer your technology needs.

Sincerely,

Coral Minton
