COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will represent the traditional engineering dynamics. The dynamics engineering course deals with accelerated motion of a rigid body and particles. There are many problems in engineering whose solutions require application of the principles of dynamics, such as mechanical devices and industrial machinery to predictions of motions of artificial satellites or spacecraft. The course has the objective to develop in the engineering student the ability to solve and analyze any problem in dynamics in a simple and a logical manner.  Acceptable for credit, UC, CSU, and for ME-212 at Cal Poly.

TEXT:

You will not be purchasing a textbook for this course since all of the material used for the course is provided by Class4me.com.  The Class4me online material is placed on Canvas for your convenience but this material is copyrighted.   In addition to the online material, Class4me is also providing a hardbound textbook for you to use.  The optional hardbound book can be picked up at Cuesta reserve desk.

 Optional: VECTOR MECHANICS OF ENGINEERS: DYNAMICS, any Edition, by Beer and Johnston (You can pick up your copy of this hard bound book for the semester at the Reserve Desk in the library.)  Please return at the end of the term.

Homework (20%) (2 will be dropped) 80-89 B (+/-)
Quizzes (25%) (2 will be dropped) 70-79 C (+)
Miscellaneous (5%) 60-69 D (+/-)
+/- grades break at 3 and 7 (ex. 83 and 87) <60 F

TEST AND HW FORMAT:  Each problem must:

  • Be neat, clear, and organized, use a ruler for drawing lines.
  • Draw free-body diagrams (if applicable) and label all variables. (-20% if missing)
  • state the equations used
  • have the answer written in the answer box with units
  • all pages must contain at the top:  NAME,  PAGE#/#
  • always use pencil and never write on the back
  • all lines must be drawn with a straight edge
  • print using uppercase letters
  • use 3 or 4 significant figures at each step in the calc (be consistent)
  • don't crowd work (one problem per page)
  • Use superscript format for units.  Example: 100lb not 100lb

TESTS/ QUIZZES:   NO make-up quizzes or exams or taken early will be permitted.  All are closed book, notes, and only basic trigonometric calculators may be used.  Students are not allowed to discuss their quizzes with any other students until after the quiz has closed.  Students must present a photo ID.

LATE POLICY:

Homework and quizzes will be marked down 10% for each day after the due date shown on Canvas.  Five days maximum late.

DROPPING: Students who are not completing the assignments/Quizzes may be dropped from the class even though you are doing well on the tests.

Final Ch 11 to Ch 17 and Appd B July 26th, 2024 Via online (You will have a 2-hour window to complete once you open the exam).  The exam window will be between 6am to 6pm PST.

Note:

  • All students must take the tests at the same day.
  • Cheating in any form will result in an F in the class.
  • Quizzes and due dates can be found on Canvas and are due by midnight PT (Pacific Time). 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Analyze problems involving 2-D rigid body kinetics.
  • Analyze problems involving 3-D rigid body kinematics.
  • Effectively communicate legible problem solutions to be understood by engineers in and out of their specific discipline.
