TEXT:  Essentials of Athletic Injury Management, 11th ed., William Prentice.

 

Course Description

Provides the student with basic exposure to the care and prevention of activity

injuries.  Includes general principles in sports medicine and athletic training.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Integrate knowledge of the inflammatory process to outline appropriate treatments for various sports injuries.
  • Analyze signs and symptoms to determine the extent and type of various sports pathologies.

 

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify the anatomical structures of the human body that are most applicable to the study of sport injuries.
  • Analyze signs and symptoms to determine the extent and type of various sport pathologies
  • Integrate knowledge of the inflammatory process to outline appropriate treatments for various sports injuries.
  • Understand and implement current methods of basic rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the recognition, pathology and immediate care of common athletic injuries.
  • Develop working knowledge of the prevention of sports injuries.

 

 

Course Requirements:

Exams: There will be 3 x 60 point exams. Exams will be multiple choice, short answer and paragraph form. These questions will include lecture notes, power points, videos and the textbook. Exams must be completed before the deadline posted!

Quizzes: There will be 13 x 10 point quizzes each week that there is not a major exam.

Assignments and Discussions must be submitted on or before the designated time and date. Pay attention to the due dates. Makeups will result in a deduction of points. 1 discussion/introduction and at least 4 short assignments.

 

Grading is based on the total cumulative points for all written assignments, exams, discussions and quizzes.

Approximate breakdown:

3 Exams (100 points each)

13 quizzes (10 points each)

1 discussion (5 points)

4 or more assignments (10 points)

At the end of the semester if you are between two grades, one percentage extra credit may be awarded to you if you have met the following criteria:  you have logged into class regularly, you are on time with your assignments and tests, extra credit as assigned.
